The Doctor Isn't

A young academic tells tales about his life in the American educational system and its discontents. I can't imagine I have any readers left, but in the case that I do, I came across this and it seemed like it was something that many of you - like myself - might find it worth a read: it's a piece from Antenna about being single in academia. The Doctor Isn't: North American Calendar Possum

http://thedoctorisnt.blogspot.com/2010/09/north-american-calendar-possum.html

A young academic tells tales about his life in the American educational system and its discontents. North American Calendar Possum. I'm supposed to be writing. Well, editing and adding. Whatever. Today's the first day in the new term that I've managed to get completely to myself, free from anything but chores and what-not. Naturally, I have ridiculous writer's block, even though I'm editing and adding. Or whatever. Posted by Dr. Curmudgeon. One response to “North American Calendar Possum”. I can definite...

A young academic tells tales about his life in the American educational system and its discontents. You're Leaving on a Jet Plane. She's Not. Continuing with thinking about the trip, there are a lot of good bits to remember. I found myself running through the best stories from the trip with a friend on the phone last night - most of them involved airport travel or Americans abroad - and other than running into my old undergrad adviser unexpectedly. It's not your time to board.". And with that, head hung i...

July 2, 2009. 8212; unknownadjunct @ 1:07 am. I see from this op-ed in the LA Times. That the Dean of the UC Berkeley Law School is advocating that the University of California system add an entirely online university. He gives two reasons: first, so that the UC system can do “more with less”. Hmmmm… I believe that usually works out to doing “less with less”. Building a new UC — In Cyberspace. 2 Comments ». Research into Research Funds. Just another shout into the ether. Might Be a Problem. Posted by Dance under Uncategorized. I live in a 1928 house built from a Sears kit, and while the landlady renovated the kitchen, the bathroom seems pretty close to original. So it’s got a shower conversion that consists of hanging some metal racks from the ceiling to hold a shower curtain around the clawfoot tub. I cannot see any empty screwholes on the shower curtain rack, but I am concerned. When Is the Essay Due?

So what makes this guy good? To me, this is interesting because it shows how the presence of numbers can distort perceptions. Yeah, this is one of those “ideology vs. empiricism” posts. I just can’t kick the habit! Structures are very rigid, so it’s quite sound reasoning to say, no, there’s no coincidences, there’s...Is severely fla...

At my graduate institution, there was a corner of lawn near my department that everyone would cut across, so that the constant pressure of feet made an unsightly bare path. As if you had any choice. The end of macho? February 21, 2009 in Rantings. Tags: cowboys can suck it. Are the days of the macho in politics over? What’s great is how his less macho style is also incredibly effective in political conflicts. Why keep playing Mr. Nice Guy? Now it seems perceptions have gone the other way: take these pieces by Bob Herbert. And a (thematically) related post by Nate Silver. Tl;dr version: Obama got pretty much what he wanted, and Republicans look like obstructionist asshats.

Natural Solutions to Death in the Techno-Age. The Doctor is Waiting. June 22, 2014. My name is Hattie Bryant and I am one of those 76 million baby boomers born in the US between 1946 and 1964. The experience of my mother’s death in 1990 started me thinking about how I want to die and now I think it is time to try to convince my peers that we all must think about how we want to die. The Doctor is Waiting. What went right for your parents who have died and what is going right as you care for aging parents?
