An Adirondack Naturalist in Michigan: February 2015
http://adknaturalist.blogspot.com/2015_02_01_archive.html
An Adirondack Naturalist in Michigan. Saturday, February 28, 2015. Yesterday some friends and I went to Port Huron to see the long-tailed ducks (formerly old squaws) on the St. Clair River in Port Huron. Last year, apparently they were there in rafts by the tens of thousands. We didn't see that many yesterday, but we did see many, many hundreds. Bridge over St. Clair River to Canada. Here's what the scene was like:. Male long-tailed duck stretching. Here's what it sounds like:. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).
An Adirondack Naturalist in Michigan: July 2014
http://adknaturalist.blogspot.com/2014_07_01_archive.html
An Adirondack Naturalist in Michigan. Saturday, July 19, 2014. What's Bloomin' at the Homestead. Last week while mowing the yard, I found a tiny purple blob where I had planted some new prairies flowers this spring. I was very excited - must go get a photo of i! Well, it took a while, but yesterday when I got home from work I decided to grab the camera and shoot it.and whatever else was blooming, for right now the grass land flowers are starting their seasonal show. And the horsemint is at its prime!
An Adirondack Naturalist in Michigan: April 2015
http://adknaturalist.blogspot.com/2015_04_01_archive.html
An Adirondack Naturalist in Michigan. Monday, April 20, 2015. Early Spring Flowers at Nan Weston. We had a spate of warm (to me "hot") weather at the end of last week - in the 70s! This meant the woodland flowers should be popping. So Sunday morning I headed out to Nan Weston preserve to see what might be up. I made this trip primarily as recon for a group we are taking out there on Tuesday. Most of the rue anemone were also closed when I arrived. By the time I left, most were open. The blue cohosh was j...

Tuesday, July 17, 2012. Travel Tuesday: Phoenix Herpetological Society. For this Travel Tuesday, please enjoy a writeup that on the Phoenix Herpetological Society, which appears in this month's issue of Times Publications. I could have just summed it up with "We got to touch Galapagos tortoises, saw endangered crocodiles, and OMG so many cool snakes. But I guess a full writeup is a little more informative.). And add your own if you have something to share. Get trampled by a bunch of hungry tortoises?

From Bluebirds to Turtles: January 2015
http://frombluebirdstoturtles.blogspot.com/2015_01_01_archive.html
From Bluebirds to Turtles. Saturday, January 24, 2015. On the day after Christmas, I was surprised to find Bert Umber out ambling around the back yard. Bert is a male Eastern Box Turtle. Male box turtles usually have red or orange irises while female box turtles usually have brown irises. We first saw Bert Umber back in July 2014. He is named for his somewhat burnt umber coloration. Another feature that stands out is his particularly prominent growth rings on each scute. Eral of his scutes have an angular.

From Bluebirds to Turtles: VISITORS TO THE BIRD ROOM AND DECK
http://frombluebirdstoturtles.blogspot.com/2015/05/visitors-to-bird-room-and-deck.html
From Bluebirds to Turtles. Saturday, May 16, 2015. VISITORS TO THE BIRD ROOM AND DECK. Last Saturday I spent a sometime watching birds from our bird room and the deck. Our first visitor was this male Ruby-Throated Hummingbird. Like all hummingbirds he was quite busy. So far this is the best photo I've been able to get. His gorget appears black in this photo because the sun's rays were obscured by the mature White Oak trees on the south side. As I sat quietly with the camera on the other side of the room.

From Bluebirds to Turtles: NEST BOX CHECK - MAY 8TH AND A BOLD JUMPER!
http://frombluebirdstoturtles.blogspot.com/2015/05/nest-box-check-may-8th.html
From Bluebirds to Turtles. Sunday, May 10, 2015. NEST BOX CHECK - MAY 8TH AND A BOLD JUMPER! I made the rounds to the active nests on Friday afternoon. Here is what was going on. In Lab Box #1 the Brown-headed Nuthatches have a total of six eggs that are white with reddish brown splotches especially concentrated around the large end of the egg. They should be hatching in around a week. In Lab Box #4 there appears to be a chickadee pie, divided into 5 wedges! In Home Box #1 there are five well feathered E...
