The dragonhunter diaries

Friday, 14 August 2015. One thing I do look forward to during the school summer hols is our annual visit to Cragside, where the Slipper Tarn is the best site I know for Black Darter and to date has never failed to deliver. An elevated acidic lake half way up the hillside trail from the main car park to the play area. My first photographic record of this stage of development so a good result after four years of visits here. Colouring similar to female but abdomen noticeably waisted and. This one a male.

The dragonhunter diaries: The Drought Continues . . .

http://www.thedragonhunter.blogspot.com/2015/08/the-drought-continues.html

Sunday, 9 August 2015. The Drought Continues . . . Since my fortuitous encounter with a Southern Hawker on Tuesday it's been business as usual in the valley, one visit to Thornley Woods Pond and two to Far Pasture have resulted in Dragonfly numbers (of species I might normally expect to see this time of year) resembling an Australian Cricket Team scorecard :. L Red damsel 0. Com Blue damsel 0. Male common darter pointing his abdomen directly at the sun (I checked) in an attempt to cool down by. To be hon...

Two views of mature male Azure Damselfly. Similar to other bluets but in Gateshead only confusion species. Is Common Blue damsel, and beware 'cos most sites hold both. Close-up showing the U-shape on segment two of the. There are other subtle differences like two black lines on the thorax and narrower antehumeral stripes but if you are close enough to see these properly then the other differences should be apparent too. This is an immature male. A striking mix of pale pink and mid-blue,. Of the green for...

The dragonhunter diaries: Emperor Dragonfly

http://www.thedragonhunter.blogspot.com/p/emperor-dragonfly.html

The largest and most aggressive of Gateshead's dragons, the male has an imperial air of superiority about it, being bold, brash and obvious at the pond, fast, direct flight at head height, or dashing out over open water without fear, like it owns the whole pond. Intruders are dealt with aggressively and they regularly feed on other dragonflies, even hawkers on occasion. The earliest large dragonfly of our area, they may be encountered in June through to late August. Emperor is a handsome feller indeed.

About Me And My Patch. Saturday, 8 August 2015. An off patch day today had me visiting Thursley Common with Marc Heath ( see his superb blog here. Dragon Habitat At Thursley. We spent 7 hours in glorious weather chasing down Dragonflies, of which we found 16 species, two of those being new to me, the Black Darter and the Common Hawker, although the latter only gave flight views, the former were seen in good numbers, giving lots of photo opportunities. Newly emerged Common Darter. 8 August 2015 at 20:08.

http://notmanywords.blogspot.com/2015/08/little-owl-kestrel.html

Thursday, 6 August 2015. Little Owl and Kestrel. Tuesday saw me at South Shields in the hope of seeing Short-eared Owl. In the event the wind was too strong and it was keeping the Owls hunkered down (if indeed they were still there). I was still happy though as four Little Owl put on a great show posing well. A juvenile Kestrel was hunting and again posed for pictures. 10 May 2016 at 19:41. Really lovely shots here, especially of the Little Owl. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). The Dragonhound | Wandering in the Fifteenth Century.

Wandering in the Fifteenth Century. Roland de Veleville or Roland de Belleville? May 16, 2015. I was reading this interesting summary of the case of Sir Roland de Velville/Veleville. 8211; who may or may not have been Henry VII’s illegitimate son – and thought of something. First things first: these Bellevilles actually started out as Harpedannes, and the Harpedannes started out as English Harpedons. (Possible alternative spellings: Harpden, Harpeden, Harpsden, Harpenden.). 8216;, and the name does occur...
