The Elusive Commandment

Tuesday, March 3, 2009. Important note: I am not talking about the aspect of the Sabbath that includes corporate worship.  That is certainly an aspect, and I will get to it.  However, when it comes to the "on six days do all your work" aspect of the Sabbath I think we need to plan out our Home-Work and watch out that Garage Doors don't interfere with the 7th day.  Good luck.  . The Elusive Commandment: November 2008

http://www.theelusivecommandment.blogspot.com/2008_11_01_archive.html

Tuesday, November 11, 2008. I find that I struggle to help people rest. I think the reason is that - as brilliant as I am - it is difficult for people to rest. I was talking with a friend, let's call him Casey because let's face it - very few people read this blog! Today it is more the norm to take an entire weekend off. But taking a true Sabbath, really not working, really not checking your email or staying busy. is just as rare. I mean, if other pastors are working 60-70 hours a week (which is what chu...

"welcome to westin" (are capital letters un-relaxing? And I have trouble resting. I don't know if the Westin (westin) has the answers. Posted by Matt Blazer. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).

I like the paragraph that begins to spell out a tension of how "restful" any given activity/pursuit really is. I also like how you're beginning to spell out and art...

The Elusive Commandment: Times

http://www.theelusivecommandment.blogspot.com/2008/07/times.html

Tuesday, July 15, 2008. There is a lot of argument over whether the Day of Rest is to be Saturday or Sunday. Some of it is good, some not, and we will take it up again (albeit lightly) later. However, those arguments are among Christians. Jewish men and women celebrate the Sabbath from 18 minutes before sundown on Friday Night, through Saturday night at sundown. Almost 25 hours. Only Royalty and the very wealthy. And, those who rely upon Yahweh, and acknowledge his kingship over all things. It has been a...

http://mattblazer.blogspot.com/2010/05/mentoring-profile-7-james-norwood.html

Tuesday, May 25, 2010. Mentoring Profile #7: James Norwood Blazer Senior. My grandpa was a WW2 Co-Pilot in a bomber (Claims Hitler gave up after he heard Jim Blazer had shown up), a salesman (mostly to industrial plumbing companies), played the stand up bass his whole life, had four children, and refinished furniture in his spare time. This is his flight school picture. Do I have a choice? He died in 2008. The nice suit I own I bought for his funeral. He would have been proud in a straightforward...Hey M...

Tuesday, May 04, 2010. Mentor Profile #2: Dale and Dave. Since I tackled a huge one with number 1, I thought I would do an easier mentoring moment I had a few years ago for the second post. They seemed to figure out that I did not understand these things - either instinctively or through previous mentoring. It was a good, light lesson - on being a man, taking care of one's yard, listening to older men, and general neighborliness. Posted by Matt Blazer. I am loving this topic and loving these stories!

Sunday, May 16, 2010. Mentoring Profile #5: The Marvel Universe. So, the reason I haven't written in awhile is that I cannot decide what next to write about (or who). My main thoughts were another author: John Eldredge or Brennan Manning; possibly John Piper, but it was really just his way of thinking "by enjoying Him forever" from the Shorter Catechism. Second Main thought (really the first) was. BA ba ba ba: The Marvel Universe. And, as a man, there was a pleasant amount of violence, speed, movement - ...

Blazer's Blog: February 2010

http://mattblazer.blogspot.com/2010_02_01_archive.html

Friday, February 19, 2010. But Rachel says the 90 is for how many days. So: B1Y is my workout; sounds more like a disease. I enjoyed it. I enjoyed my kids a lot today - they are beautiful and funny and weird. I sat at the landing of the stairs on the way to the playroom before bed, they threw things at me, I threw them back. It was all pretty fun until Julia threw a stroller. Seriously. No one was injured, but seriously? Then ask, "I just wonder what you thought of it and if you thought it was realistic?

Tuesday, November 17, 2009. That link was NOT my blog. hilarious. i don't think i have much in common with that person. Monday, November 16, 2009. Our family had dinner with a number of friends on Saturday Night and we all spent some time talking about what we were thankful for. I thought my wife had the most interesting/unique thought: she is thankful for St. Louis. She had a number of reasons, and even has her own blog. Maybe that should be her next writing topic. PS - I fixed the link. The point of th...

Blazer's Blog: September 2009

http://mattblazer.blogspot.com/2009_09_01_archive.html

Monday, September 14, 2009. Rachel spent Saturday painting the house. This meant two things: One, I was with the girls all day (awesome) and two we needed to not be in the house in case there was a showing (sometimes awesome). So, we went to the zoo. There were highlights: we waited five minutes on the Black Rhino and he then came out. There were lowlights: we missed the Cheetah running by 13 seconds (twice). Is it because we let her watch Kill Bill so many times? Posted by Matt Blazer. I am feeling grea...

Wednesday, May 05, 2010. Mentor Profile #3: Andre Dubus. When I moved to St. Louis I was tired of trying to improve myself through books, trying to assimilate so much Christian information, etc. that I took a break from reading Christian books. During this time I picked up a book an ex-girlfriend had given me called, "Meditations from a Movable Chair". It is a book of essays by Andre Dubus. I have since purchased every book of his I could find. Posted by Matt Blazer. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

Monday, May 24, 2010. Mentoring Profile #6: Donald Toomey. Dr Donald Toomey is my mom's dad. He is not her biological father, and I don't know when I learned that but it never made any different - he was always Grandpa, her dad, etc. I got to go to their 50th Wedding Anniversary in 2001, where my Grandma could not stop talking about the kiss "he planted on me" on Friday night. Grandpa had a PHD in Geology (Grandma drew the pictures - meticulously) for his thesis. He was a learned man, and spent his r...

Blazer's Blog: July 2009

http://mattblazer.blogspot.com/2009_07_01_archive.html

Wednesday, July 29, 2009. It is 8:38 as I write this blog. I am drinking my second cup of coffee, my girls are watching "Sleeping Beauty" and eating cereal with me (and eating gummy vitamins and drinking juice). If my head wasn't cold I think I would feel the same as I did in the Spring. I owe a lot of people phone calls. I think Tom tops the list. I have to finish a class during this family time. But, I finished a longer systematic theology class during Chemo - surely that was harder! Today Rachel (Matt...

My Unconventional Adventures in Spirituality. Today’s Soul Quench comes from my favorite little online pick me up “Note from the Universe.”. This morning on my way to work I was feeling a little Blah…Blah… I wanted things to happen faster in my life. So I started to internally shout, protest and become dissatisfied with the world around me. During my train commute I tried playing Candy Crush on my phone, hoping it would take my mind off of my despair. Well, that didn’t work! Tut A Note from the Universe.

Communications is About Change. July 21, 2015. We fall into the trap of issuing press releases with no news because someone along the way forgot that it’s not seeing the company name in the Globe and Mail, NYT or evening news that matters, but bringing information to an audience that changes their behaviour in a manner that is beneficial to the company. Every communications plan should begin by asking, what change do we need to make? Are You Pole Dancing in the Graveyard? April 27, 2015. Because many of ...
