October | 2013 | Statistically Significant... Or Not
https://arboone2.wordpress.com/2013/10
Statistically Significant… Or Not. Monthly Archives: October 2013. October 8, 2013. Mission #1 Exploring the MTBoS. My name is Roxy and I am a high school math teacher. I started teaching a little more than a year ago so this is just my second year. Currently, I am teaching Algebra II and Honors Algebra II (and an adopted Pre-Calculus class while a colleague is out on maternity leave). I’m not really sure I have a favorite open-ended/rich problem. I’ve just started this year (forgive me, ...I MADE A BLOG!

Statistically Significant… Or Not. Monthly Archives: June 2015. June 18, 2015. Remembering Why I Teach. I decided earlier this year (my third year teaching) that it would be my last. I love being in the classroom with my students, but I do not love all of the other things that come with my job. A funny thing happened when I was interviewing and upon receiving job offers. I found myself excited about the idea of teaching again. I was looking forward to starting fresh — as a teacher! And then suddenly the ...

There are 10 kinds of people in the world…. 8230;or so the joke goes. A blog about teaching Maths. Monthly Archives: March 2014. ROTF – 24th March 2014. Year 7 – Probability. An ‘improving learning in maths’ lesson idea. Year 8 Simultaneous Equations. A QR code activity here. Year 9 – Percentages; Multiples, factors, primes; HCF and LCM. Year 10 – Circles, semicircles, sectors and arcs; Surface area and volumes of solids. A nice question to introduce sectors of circles: Which pizza slice is bigger? ROTF ...

The MTBoS Challenge | Purple Pronto Pups (My World of Teaching)
https://purpleprontopups.wordpress.com/2013/10/07/the-mtbos-challenge
Purple Pronto Pups (My World of Teaching). Just a high school math teacher trying to do the everyday stuff really, really well. Asymp; 3 Comments. So, I’ve been blogging for a while (although *ahem* not consistently, as I’m sure you can tell) and participating on Twitter with some cool math folks who affectionately refer to themselves as the MathTwitterBlogOSphere, aka MTBoS. You can read all about them and their initiative here. This post is supposed to address the following prompt:. But basically it is...

There are 10 kinds of people in the world…. 8230;or so the joke goes. A blog about teaching Maths. ROTF – 18th November 2013. Year 7 – Accurate use of a calculator; Introducing Geometry; Coordinates. Year 8 – Ratio. Year 9 – Venn diagrams; Standard form with negative indices; Four rules of fractions. Wanna be in my gang. A nice introduction to the idea of sets. Could be expanded to having two students each choose a type of number, which introduces the idea of an intersection. Has it changed my teaching?

There are 10 kinds of people in the world…. 8230;or so the joke goes. A blog about teaching Maths. First ipad lesson review. Fresh from a day’s training with Dragonfly – ‘The iPad in the Maths Classroom’ with Neil Atkin (@natkin), I was keen to try my first iPad lesson with top set Year 8 girls. I say first lesson, we had actually used a previous lesson for familiarisation. Thanks to Neil for all the ideas! When I’m talking, iPads are on the desk with the covers closed. I then let them loose on Google an...

the feedback is beautiful
The feedback is beautiful. Today in NYC it’s going to be a scorcher. I am traveling for business or pretty much just a happy hour meet and greet. Wearing some shitty lightweight bluevchinos, Sperry boat shoes (classy and always appropriate), AA red chambray Oxford, and my trusty timex military. Only going for one night so just needed my thrift store small duffel and work attaché. Let’s see how this holds up to the heat. If You Make It. 183;Tags: big scarey monsters. 8216;s American Red Ale Fixed Gear beer.
The Feedback Loop | Thoughts about maths and teaching.
Thoughts about maths and teaching. February 12, 2015. I was reading on the NCETM website about films that have mathematicians as main characters. Four films are mentioned:. One commentator says that these films contribute to stereotypes about maths since they are all about men, men who are unsociable, and that they are uncomfortable in their roles. Films are not helping maths break away from a “nerdy” stereotype. Then another commentator goes on to lambaste this idea by saying:. January 20, 2015. My year...

The Feedback Loop
Song of the Day 03/21/12: s/s/s - "Museum Day". What you are about to hear is one of the most insane collaborations you'll ever come across. s/s/s is a side project of big name artists - but not ones that you would normally find working together. The three "s"' stand for Sufjan Stevens, Son Lux, and Serengeti. The project's first debut EP is called Beak and Claw. And you can download the whole on iTunes right now. If you thought Sufjan's work in Age of Adz. Labels: age of adz. It's clear that the band ha...
