Friendly Tester: June 2015

http://www.thefriendlytester.co.uk/2015_06_01_archive.html

My thoughts on Software Testing. Tail Log File And Play A Sound When Keyword Hit. So on the testers.io. Slack team today, Maik. Does anyone know a way/tool to watch a log file and play an audio sound, if a certain keyword is found (e.g. ERROR). There is "log watch" for windows from James Bach, but I am looking for a Macintosh. So I gave it a go, and success was had! Turns out, Sublime doesn't append text, instead it overwrites the existing file! Echo "sdasdsa" log.txt. So there you have it, a fun 30 minu...

Friendly Tester: January 2014

http://www.thefriendlytester.co.uk/2014_01_01_archive.html

My thoughts on Software Testing. This is something that is discussed a lot of Twitter, sometimes defended strongly and sometimes turned into humour. The situation still doesn't appear to be changing though. In my opinion its very straight forward, Quality Assurance (QA) is not Testing nor is it the stage or step that takes place during a project to determine the quality of a product. The quality, where an individual or a team lead/manager stamps the product with a seal of quality. Cross references the wr...

Friendly Tester: May 2013

My thoughts on Software Testing. A Simple File Locker. I was doing a project that I will share will you all soon, and was running into an error whereby SpecRun was complaining to me that a file was locked by another process. So I wanted to recreate this scenario and debug it to see what the problem was, so a quick Google on how to lock a file returned some strange results relating to securely locking a file with a password etc, a quick look on stackoverflow only resulted the code to lock a file. I will b...

My thoughts on Software Testing. Interviewing - Question at CAST2015. So I tuned into the CAST live stream again tonight, and I caught the end of Rob Bowyer's talk titled "Why Should I Hire You? Because I am bloody awesome! Sorry I digressed there. From what I heard it sounded like a talk full of experience and insight. Again as per last night, I decided to take advantage of the CAST twitter printer and ask Rob a few questions. 8212; Richard Bradshaw (@FriendlyTester) August 5, 2015. For some listing the...

How can I help you? An update on crafting my career. August 10, 2016. Now that it’s almost time for me to go on what I think is a well deserved holiday, I thought it would be a good idea to take some time and see where I stand with regards to reshaping my career. So, what have I been up to? Furthermore, a couple of weeks ago, I had the privilege to receive an invitation to deliver a test automation-related workshop at the first edition of the Iasi spin-off of Romania Testing. To round things up, I’...

Things which might be of interest for developers, build adminstrators, svn admins, testers and martial arts practitioners. I note a recent spate of articles advising employers to recruit for cultural fit . And the inevitable backlash against that advice. Like most advice, this simple soundbite conceals a whole can of worms. Where Are We At? Until I came to IBM, I probably would have told you that culture. My visit to Let’s Test 2015 – Day 3. Great job, Erik! Jean-Paul Varwijk ISO 29119. The last day went...

test environment management

http://grahammaxfield.com/needs-test-environment-management-anyway

Who needs test environment management anyway? July 23, 2014. July 23, 2014. Ah yes, test environments; the first point of blame for development. So, where does this leave us? With one of the crucial aspects in testing being reproducibility, it is key to properly maintain and manage your test environments. The physical role of a test environment manager is in many projects unpractical and unnecessary, but the responsibilities involved should be addressed and practised; especially with the speed, size and ...

What would be the worst start to a conference? 1/3 - Graham Maxfield

http://grahammaxfield.com/worst-start-conference-13

What would be the worst start to a conference? June 30, 2014. July 1, 2014. What would be the worst start to a conference? I was pretty bloody close to doing so. Let’s Test Sweden Day 1. After leaving with what I thought was ample time, I arrived at the airport just 15 minutes before boarding. On a good day in my regular airport, Hannover, that wouldn’t be an issue, but this time I was flying from Hamburg! But, luckily it only took me 35 minutes to get to my gate, just in time for the final call. I had a...

What would be the worst start to a conference? June 30, 2014. July 1, 2014. Let’s Test Sweden Day 2. After a lovely breakfast the first keynote of the day was opened in a fine display of who cares how I look , as the facilitators jumped on stage and shook whatever they had in some strange dance. (You can YouTube this). Steve Smith then took to the stage to present Whose Ideas Are In and Whose Ideas Are Out. We then presented our findings on stage, where I gave my first keynote speech . Bill Mathews did a...

Thursday, April 13, 2017. How to Use Google Forms in the Classroom. We have Google Chrome Books in our classroom and we LOVE it! One of my favorite ways is to use Google Quizzes which is a step off of Google Forms. It is great because not only do you take the quiz on the computer so you don't have to copy, but it will grade it all for you and then give it the results right back to the student! It is such an amazing way to assess that truly is more engaging to students. Another way we use Google Forms is ...
