September 10, 2008 · 3:41 pm. Telling stories to ghosts. The above photo is of me telling ghost stories on Star Island. An island off the coast of New Hampshire. This island has lots of old creaky buildings, recorded history that includes pirates and murders and goes back to Captain John Smith, and is therefore rife with ghost stories. Understand the performance space before you tell. The day before I performed, four gentlemen who sat around and spoke about the Hurricane of ’39 pulled in a great crowd. Their advantage was that there were four of them, and when one ran out of material another could jump in, like a real conversation. Filed under Lessons in Storytelling.

An’ to sail the seven seas. Yaaaaarrrrghh! Wee sea pup wrastlin’. Captain to many a ship, two wheeled, three wheeled, and four wheeled included. Can gab at large squadrons o’ swabbies. Can tell tales as tall as they’re true. Sellin’ scooters to swabbies an’ landlubbers alike. Tellin’ off the scurvy dogs of the DMV.

All worthy qualities in a human. As an audience however…. Actually as with many things in life, the challenges of storytelling to this audience is also what makes it so rewarding.
