GAGenWeb: Gilmer County, Georgia
Part of the GAGenWeb Project. And the USGenWeb Project. Gilmer County was formed December 3,1832, from Cherokee County. Several divisions occurred over the years, leading to current boundaries. The County was named for George Rockingham Gilmer, a Congressional representative from Georgia. Ellijay was selected as the county seat in 1834; it is located on the west bank of the Ellijay River, where this river joins the Cartecay River to form the Coosawattee River. Walker County, GA: Part of the GAGenWeb Project
Was formed in 1833 from Murray County. At this time the territory of Walker included not only it's present area, but all of Dade. And a large part of Whitfield. Counties. In 1837 all of Walker's territory west of the top of Lookout Mountain was cut off and the county of Dade was established as the most northwestern county in the State. Walker County was named for Major Freeman Walke. R of Augusta, who was one of the leading members of the Bar in his day and for some years a Senator from Georgia.

Two skirmishes took place in Clarke County during the American Civil War in 1864, one near Barber's Creek and the other off of Mitchell's Road.
