Tuesday, February 17, 2004. Mark A. R. Kleiman calls it profoundly depressing. According to an ABC News poll, nearly two thirds of Americans believe the stories of Noah's Ark, the parting of the Red Sea, and the 6-day creation to be literally true. And I am reminded of a buddhist text, aimed at monks and teachers, that said that most adults are to be looked upon as children when it comes to their spiritual development. Should children be allowed to vote? Para; 7:55 AM. Saturday, February 14, 2004. If som...

Thursday, April 01, 2004. Perhaps I'm being too hard on the American public. And not hard enough on the press. Refers to studies that show that most Americans would have opposed the Bush tax cuts for favoring the rich, but were misled by the Administration, and not enlightened by the press. Similarly, the majority of those who support the Iraq war were (are still? Under the misapprehension that a) we have found WMDs in Iraq or b) that Hussein was in bed with Al Queda or c) that world opinion was with Bush.

Tuesday, August 24, 2004. I have only one thing to add to this. Marvelous piece by Mark Ames, which posits that American voters, especially the white male kind, vote against their own interests out of spite. (Thanks to digby. It's not just spite. It's something more- if I may- existential. From Notes from Underground. What has made them conceive that man must want a rationally advantageous choice? What man wants is simply INDEPENDENT choice, whatever that independence may cost and wherever it may lead.

Wednesday, December 07, 2016. Politicians are fond of saying that the government should not be picking winners and losers. Paul Ryan said it just the other day. It is a lie that needs to be put to bed once and for all. The truth is that picking winners and losers is exactly and the only thing government does. You don't have to believe in MMM to like free enterprise. Freedom is good, and free people will be enterprising. But we don't need to tilt the board toward the already rich and powerful in o...Polit...

Tuesday, June 22, 2004. AP after GWB military records. It's about time, eh? It just may be that reporters, in general, are no smarter than anyone else, in general. And it's taking most. People a long time to realize what a menace GWB is. He isn't like other presidents that lean a little this way or that way. He's the idiot son of a former president- and that is the only reason he is president- who thinks he's been annointed by God. Para; 7:57 PM. Smoggy enough for you? Trucks, then why can we regulate any.

Tuesday, December 23, 2003. Why we went to war. Noted yesterday that nary a warmonger can be found whose mind was changed about the war because no WMDs were found. And why did they all - every one of them - feel the need to make up a cover story? Leaders often go to war for less than benelovent reasons. This is no surprise. Blog post.) Again and again, and to this day, W mentions Sadaam and 9/11 in the same breath. And our poor little reptilian brains have come to associate the two. He gassed his own peo...

Monday, July 12, 2004. I'm sure that I'm just being paranoid (Part 2). I went camping and geocaching. With my family for three days this past weekend, and returned last night to find that the Bush Regime is exploring ways. To derail - oops, I mean delay. The election in the event of a terrorist attack. Right off the bat, this has two immediate benefits from OBL's point of view:. 2 It increases OBL's standing in the Muslim world because he has "derailed democracy" in America. As unthinkable as it sounds, ...

Thursday, September 23, 2004. I like conspiracy theories. Grand, sweeping, omniverous ones. I don't believe them, necessarily. But I like them. And for that reason, I'm going to put one out there. It would explain a lot, which is the great thing about conspiracy theories. If it turns out to be true, remember: You heard it here first, folks. Para; 2:20 PM. Safe v. Patriot. Tuesday, December 13, 2016. People write about the results of the election as if we can have any idea of what the real vote totals were, when we simply can't. We vote, the vote is somewhere around 50/50, and the hackers and vote counters fiddle around the edges. And perhaps there is one group that determines the outcome every time, but perhaps there is competition. Either way, inside players determine the outcome, not voters. Balloting, it's a question of who won the count, not who won the vote. Being be...

Thursday, January 05, 2017. Revised) Open Letter to President-elect Trump (anyone got an email address for him? Note: Teh Google tells me a number of mostly small news outlets are making the same argument. Dear President-elect Trump,. If you're not careful, repealing Obamacare will be a disaster for you because it will be a disaster for many of the people who voted for you. Here's a better idea than repeal and stall: Medicare For All. What would solve that problem? They will scream "Socialism! Next thing...
