The Green, Green Grass of Home

The Green, Green Grass of Home. It's all about the family. Plus the genus and species. Sunday, August 9, 2015. The first "fall" (really, late summer) feeding is down on the lawn- 15 pounds per thousand square feet of soybean meal. I actually did it last week, I just neglected to blog about it. It takes about three weeks to decay in, so it should be available to the lawn around August 21st or so, given normal rainfall. At the moment, the soil is somewhat dry, so decay won't be quite that speedy. First, th...

The Green, Green Grass of Home: When It Rains...

http://thegreengreengrassofhome.blogspot.com/2015/06/when-it-rains.html

The Green, Green Grass of Home. It's all about the family. Plus the genus and species. Wednesday, June 3, 2015. In this case, it didn't pour, it kind of deluged. We've received nearly three inches of rain in the last forty eight hours. While hardly extreme, that also helps the grass to gently, slowly recover. The gardens have also responded to the wetter weather by growing extremely fast. Unfortunately, the weeds also responded by sprouting at incredible speed, so I'll be weeding those out shortly. Note:...

The Green, Green Grass of Home. It's all about the family. Plus the genus and species. Monday, June 29, 2015. These aren't the official July Fourth photos just yet, when I traditionally photograph the end of the early season flower and lawn development. These are just extras for fun, and due to the fact that we've had so few days without rain that I'll snag any excuse to slip outside for a bit into the sun. As always, click on any photo to embiggen it. Harlequin dahlia are something I use as an accent&#4...

The Green, Green Grass of Home: Feeding Your Gardens

http://thegreengreengrassofhome.blogspot.com/2015/05/feeding-your-gardens.html

The Green, Green Grass of Home. It's all about the family. Plus the genus and species. Friday, May 29, 2015. It's the end of May, and most of the garden is in bloom at this point, although the dahlia are a little later than other plants. Every year, people ask me what I do. Really, it's easy. I tend to discontinue the monthly organics as of August as that feeding will continue to work through early October. The weekly Miracle Gro is discontinued in mid September. The Green, Green Grass of Home. It's all about the family. Plus the genus and species. Wednesday, April 15, 2015. Milk and So On. Extended evening hours and warmer weather certainly are nice! I applied 8 oz per thousand square feet of whole milk, plus 3 oz per thousand kelp, 3 oz per thousand humic acid, and 3 oz per thousand sodium laureth sufate solution. Those can sit until the next rainfall, which will probably be Friday. Sodium laureth sulfate flocculates (gathers together) soils, making them softer...

Skeptics & Politics: June 2008

Monday, June 23, 2008. Sad, Sad, Sad, Sad. Here are some quotes.  I replaced any of the foul language with a number because he would have been pissed off by that which is just the way he liked it. Scratch any cynic and you’ll find a disappointed idealist. A lot of people try to get out of jury duty by lying. You don't have to lie; tell the judge the truth. Tell him you'd make a terrific juror because you can spot guilty people [clicks his tounge] just like that! Phil Davis died". "Phil Davis? I just saw ...

Let me get this straight, Michael Phelps won the most olympic gold medals of anyone ever, and he did so while being a pot head. He does a drug that makes you lazy, slow, and want to eat every unhealthy thing you can get your grubby little hands on, and he STILL WON MORE GOLD MEDALS THAN ANYONE. ELSE. EVER. . http://skepticsandpolitics.blogspot.com/2009/03/ubiquitous-photography-and-police.html

Sunday, March 29, 2009. Ubiquitous photography and the police. Interesting list of cops who were caught behaving illegally. 160;in NYC by the prevalence of cameras on Carlos Miller's very well named blog. Photography is Not A Crime It is a First Amendment Right. What is interesting is the list is that all of the acts involve cops setting up citizens to take some sort of legal fall rather than just the cops doing something illegal off duty. . I cannot trust video or photographs as truthful evidence. I...

Sunday, September 13, 2009. Whenever I give a lecture on great individuals, or people who my students think of as a hero, the usual response is family members or sports personalities. Then I give mine. I ask the class, "If someone saved the life of one person, that's a good thing right? That person would be a hero, yes? And if you managed to save, say three or four that would be better, yes? Not to diminish saving only one, but more is better, right? My hero, Norman Borlaug. Who's your hero now?

First we have a new design of a bird potholder. We've also used a similar design on notebook covers. There the bird is bigger and has eggs and a hatchling around it. Next a new faerie house by Aline.
