Wednesday, 29 December 2010. The Five Day Club. A new year looms, and a new challenge. Inspired by a few insane chaps on a forum for Coast to Coast walkers. And boosted by my crossing within eight and a half days in the summer, I have decided to tackle the challenge of joining the small band who have managed to complete the 191-mile route inside five days. It will mean some night walking, and I will be ditching the comfort of my Hilleberg Akto. Tent for a bivi bag to save time and - crucially - weight.

Tuesday, 5 January 2010. The date for my second solo assault on the C2C has been set. I aim to leave St Bees at sunrise on Sunday 30 May. I’ve booked a fortnight off of work to allow for a few extra days at the end if I need them, but shall still aim to keep to the ten-day schedule I originally set. Wednesday, 16 September 2009. I’m already planning another assault on the 10-day solo C2C next May, learning the lessons of my first attempt. I’ll also pay more attention to waterproofing my equipment, with a proper dry bag for clothes, a rucksack liner and a waterproof map case (I’m told Ortlieb are the best). If money allows, I’ll also go for a lighter and smaller two-season sleeping bag rather than the bulky three-season Vango I have at the moment, which is a bit of a luxury. 17 September 2009 at 01:08.

There's always debate among walkers about what to take and what to leave out to reduce weight and bulk, so for the record here's what is packed in my rucksack (with drybag liner) this time:. Total pack weight: 24lb (10.9kg). I'll be wearing a North Face jacket, North Face fleece, T-shirt, zip-off trousers, boxers, walking socks, Timex Ironman watch and North Face Syncline GTX boots.
