The Happy Hovel

The adventures of another city couple gone country. Tuesday, November 16, 2010. An early frost in November caught us mostly by surprise. We managed to cover the tomato plants, but it was a very hard freeze (29.1 deg F by our digital therm) and still managed to kill off the plants. But covering them did save the fruit that was on them. After a long afternoon of harvesting we have over 20-25 pounds of tomatoes! Links to this post. Monday, October 18, 2010. The garden is still going strong in mid October.

The Happy Hovel: August 2009

http://thehappyhovel.blogspot.com/2009_08_01_archive.html

The adventures of another city couple gone country. Saturday, August 29, 2009. Originally uploaded by Beaver w/ a Toothbrush. The chickens have been laying and the bees have been buzzing. Too bad the bees buzzed out. The spring/summer garden is almost done. The pumpkins and luffas are still spreading. We learned some good lessons. We're going to put the fall vegetable garden right by the house so we see it and weed it conveniently. We are also spreading out a bunch of stray bales to help ...

The adventures of another city couple gone country. Thursday, September 9, 2010. This year instead of planting in the spring and trying to keep plants alive through the long hot months of May, June and possibly July we instead planted with the monsoons in mid July. So now everything is starting to produce and looking quite healthy! Zucchini are already becoming a regular with each meal! Links to this post. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).

The Happy Hovel: Bee progress

http://thehappyhovel.blogspot.com/2010/06/bee-progress.html

The adventures of another city couple gone country. Thursday, June 24, 2010. Originally uploaded by Beaver w/ a Toothbrush. We opened the hive to check the bees' progress a few weeks ago. The main thing we were looking for was brood. If there wasn't any brood then the hive would die out. We were happy to find quite a bit of brood. At least two of the forms are shown in this picture: larva and capped brood. There are probably also eggs in some of the cells but they are hard to see because they are so small.

Happy Howes

Monday, May 25, 2015. Henry James Howe: Month Three. This little 3 month old is starting to outgrow his colic and wants to go to sleep on his own at night. Likes to focus on his hands and try to suck his thumb (or whole fist). Has started eating every 2 hours again (even at night). Doesn't like to smile at strangers. Likes to observe everything. Hasn't rolled over yet. Fits in 0-3 month clothing very comfortably. Still loves his bath time, but absolutely despises having lotion put on him after. Come 8:30...
