The spinal cord is housed within a final encasement called the intrathecal sac (lets make these analogous to the black-plastic cable/cord covers). Within this covering the spinal cord is bathed in a fluid that's shared with the brain or "cerebrum", cleverly termed "cerebro-spinal fluid".
