The Heckeler - Historical Performance and Beyond: January 2015
http://www.theheckeler.ca/2015_01_01_archive.html
Andrew Burn, Historical Bassoonist. Tuesday, January 20, 2015. Links to this post. Thursday, January 8, 2015. Today I write from the train to Schipol after spending most of the morning with Peter de Koningh. Back for usual maintenance, my Eichentopf. Instrument at 415. Boy, what a treat. As a modern bassoonist I have been taught that there are so many variations in reed making, and each can have a profound effect upon the sound and playability of an instrument. Just read this. What is easily forgotten in...

The Heckeler - Historical Performance and Beyond: September 2014
http://www.theheckeler.ca/2014_09_01_archive.html
Andrew Burn, Historical Bassoonist. Wednesday, September 10, 2014. Marketing these days is becoming so pervasive that it is hard not think to define ourselves by what we buy, rather than who we are. Just yesterday I was on the train to Liestal and saw a billboard ask "who are you? Asserting that we would 'find ourselves' by what we bought at their store. Marketing is everywhere and it's getting sneakier the more we learn to ignore it. Are you a dog person, or a cat person? An Apple user, or a PC user?

An amateur confronts his instrument. Wednesday, June 12, 2013. The film adaptation of Farley Mowat's Never Cry Wolf. Features the bassoon prominently. This is a fictive addition by the filmmakers, as Mowat never mentions a bassoon, but it's a small change to an already somewhat fictional book, and it makes us bassoonists happy. Here's one of the appearances of the bassoon:. Wow, I can't sound like that in my living room, much less outside in the snow. Still, gorgeous playing - - David Wells says. 10 Tips...

http://bassoonoperator.blogspot.com/2014/08/the-scoop-on-ivory-bell-rings.html
An amateur confronts his instrument. Sunday, August 3, 2014. The scoop on ivory bell rings. MMI recently replaced an ivory ring on a 12k Heckel with synthetic, due to concerns about its salability. Pictures here. So what's the deal with ivory these days? Well, the full story is a little complicated. Wikipedia has an article on the Ivory trade. Schreger lines in elephant ivory. Schreger lines in mammoth ivory. Mammoths are an interesting case. Mammoths aren't endangered, they are extinct, and have bee...

An amateur confronts his instrument. Sunday, January 26, 2014. Gustav Holst wrote a wind quintet. Gustav Holst wrote a wind quintet! It's not well known, and was in fact lost for many years. Written in 1903, the manuscript was rediscovered in 1978, and it received its official world premiere in 2006. More than a century between composition and performance, that must be some kind of record. Raymond Head seems to have edited the definitive edition, which is available from his web site. Chapter 11: The wood.

The charts show my basic fingering(s) for each note. I may at some point add charts for alternate fingerings and/or trills, but they aren’t there yet. There are now four separate versions of my fingering chart, suitable for different uses:. The Beginner Chart includes fingerings for the first three octaves of the bassoon (Bb. Hot Club Faux Gitane.
