9,000 Miles from Kansas

Wednesday, July 29, 2015. Back in May, I was in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, getting ready to fly up to a town called Mwanza. I would then take a four-hour bus ride on to another town called Musoma. We have a large translation project going on in Musoma serving eight language communities, with plans to expand even more. I began to explain our work of language development and Bible translation. And this man, John*, was very taken in by what I described. I felt the Holy Spirit prompting me to jump in and dig a...

9,000 Miles from Kansas: August 2011

http://www.theheffts.blogspot.com/2011_08_01_archive.html

Sunday, August 7, 2011. On Friday, Josiah turned 7, and we celebrated with a Super Mario Brothers birthday party. Happy Birthday, sweet Josiah! We love you so much! Last Monday, Josiah and Anna started back to school after 5 weeks of "summer" holiday. However, since it's technically cool season in Tanzania at the moment, I should probably call it "winter" holiday. Having a few weeks of unstructured life was nice, though. Here's a brief recap of our "summer" activities. Anna had a blast playing in the san...

9,000 Miles from Kansas: October 2011

Monday, October 17, 2011. Making 'Cents' of American Money. Now that furlough is months away instead of years away, I decided it was probably time to start (re)introducing the kids to American money. Josiah and Anna are both beginning to figure out counting with Tanzanian shillings, but pennies, nickles, dimes, quarters and dollars are quite foreign to them. So, after finding this great money game idea at No Time for Flashcards. First we picked out some plastic food and made our price list. The next year...

Tuesday, March 5, 2013. Our New Normal: Type 1 Diabetes. Your son has Type 1 Diabetes.". Those are words we never expected to hear spoken about our son. Our joyful, energetic, usually healthy boy? He's never even missed a day of school. Two weeks ago, we took Josiah to the doctor after noticing somewhat sudden changes in a few of his normal habits. He seemed to be going to the bathroom a lot. He explained what Type 1 diabetes was. From the doctor's office, Josiah was admitted to Children's Mercy Hospital...

Family, life, and faith. Lily’s 1st Birthday. Valentine’s 2001: When I Tricked Jennifer. Ten years ago I tricked Jennifer into a date. Obviously it worked! So a week after Valentine’s Day 2001, we went out to dinner for the first time. I can’t remember the name, for it changed names many times and right now is called the Feed Lot. Excellent name for a sit down restaurant! Happy Valentine’s Day, Jennifer and Happy 10 years since we started dating! Share on Facebook (Opens in new window). Subscribe to Blog...

Sunday, July 12, 2015. Claire, Drew, Finn, and Mitch Heffron. Thursday, April 3, 2014. Today Mitch told me all about his friend Preston at school and how his nickname is "Coco Megaphone". :). He's been getting really mad lately, terrible temper tantrums and slinging hilarious insults like: "your bones have pee in them" and "oh yeah? Well you have baby legs! Our house, in the middle of our street. Just another WordPress.com weblog. May 28, 2011. A Look Back, Part I. Wednesday, April 13, 2011. Posted by The Heflebower's. Tuesday, March 22, 2011. This is the picture that change our lives, even if just for a short time. I sent this picture to Scott through a text message that said, "Not sure what to say." The truth is I didn't. Things are not always easy in a house where two parents work and adding a new baby is quite a. Something of which I am not fond of). Nevertheless, we were both excited and Scott came out of his office to be excited with me! A couple of days late...
