Why are flamingos pink? So why do flamingos change colour depending upon what they eat, and we don’t? Many foods that we eat have carotenoids, e.g. carrots, watermelon and prawns, but the reason that we don’t change skin colour is because we don’t eat enough of these compounds for it to have an effect on our skin. How far must we understand the historical context of production to appreciate ancient literature? Over time there has been great debate among Classical scholars as to how the Homeric poems were created. Today, a widely accepted theory is that of Milman Parry, who proved that it was possible to create long epic poems without the aid of writing [1]. This question not only affected the Greek poleis, but also affects our civilization today and is a major theme in modern literature, such as the dystopian novel.
