The Heron Files

Wednesday, August 5, 2015. Ernie was already late for an appointment so he packed up and headed home.We watched for a few more minutes and then started our way back. We had planned to spend time birding on the trip back but it was starting to get late, we were tiring, and there hadn't been much action along the beach. We did get some more nice shorebirds, including a black-bellied plover that was still in breeding plumage. Links to this post. Sunday, August 2, 2015. Pair of Spotted Sandpipers. Our group&...

The Heron Files: June 2014

http://www.theheronfiles.blogspot.com/2014_06_01_archive.html

Monday, June 30, 2014. Sunny with a chance of ? Now, I feel back about this with it almost being Independence Day here and the Bald Eagle is out national symbol, but eagles aren't the kindest of birds. They enjoy themselves some good carrion and aren't afraid to take something another bird has caught. Bryan hadn't heard it from the backyard but it had sounded really close, like something hitting the house. I had an inkling of what it might be, but we were both pretty incredulous. Still, Bryan got...My fi...

Monday, May 5, 2014. First vernal pond mapping. At the second pond we found a few more tadpoles but also a lot of water insects. The coolest for me was a little red worm. The Heron Files: November 2014

http://www.theheronfiles.blogspot.com/2014_11_01_archive.html

Tuesday, November 18, 2014. We have heard back from a hummingbird bander who has identified the bird as an immature male Rudy-throated hummingbird. Hope he has survived the recent cold weather and this was jsut a refueling stop on his way to warmer climes. It's been a great experience learning more about hummingbird identification. Here is my wife's write-up and thoughts on what species it might be. Http:/ www.pbase.com/gbheron/2014 hummingbird. Links to this post. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).

Sprouts and Wildlings, A Virginia Garden Blog: Aug 15, 2012

http://sproutsandwildlings.blogspot.com/2012_08_15_archive.html

Sprouts and Wildlings, A Virginia Garden Blog. Wednesday, August 15, 2012. August Bloom Day - mallows. Happy Garden Blogger's Bloom Day! Here's a star for you: people around here like to call this one Texas Star hibiscus. The common names of the showy Eastern and Southeastern native mallows are ridiculously similar. Swamp hibiscus (this one), scarlet rose mallow (the same), swamp rose mallow (a different one), seashore mallow or saltmarsh mallow (another one), marshmallow (yum! Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).

Sprouts and Wildlings, A Virginia Garden Blog. Thursday, August 2, 2012. First view of August. It's August and it's hot, hot, hot. Most of my gardens are looking very tired and thirsty, and not very floriferous. The front-yard garden is probably the only presentable one right now. I pulled out most of the annual black-eyed Susans because they were beginning to look very ratty. Thanks for visiting my garden this August. Check out Town Mouse and Country Mouse's blog. Sprouts and Wildlings, A Virginia Garden Blog. Tuesday, July 10, 2012. Virginia creeper, Parthenocissus quinquefolia. Shasta Daisy, Leucanthemum x superbum 'Becky'. Next up is Shasta Daisy. In these lazy, hazy, daisy days of summer, I always enjoy seeing the crisp white of the daisies. With sunglasses on, the white jumps out against the dark background of the evergreens behind it. http://sproutsandwildlings.blogspot.com/2012_07_16_archive.html

Sprouts and Wildlings, A Virginia Garden Blog. Monday, July 16, 2012. Last week we finally had some rain and a few days of pleasantly cool temperatures. It didn't last, but just after a soaking rain, I left work early and stopped by a rose garden in a local park. It seemed like the roses had been pruned recently and most were not in full bloom. But there were enough roses to have some fun with macro photography. In fact, I ended up focusing a lot of my time on a few nearly perfect blooms of Love and Peace.

Sprouts and Wildlings, A Virginia Garden Blog. Sunday, September 16, 2012. Happy (Belated) Garden Blogger's Bloom Day! One of the greatest benefits of GBBD is that it makes me go out and take a close look in the garden even when I'm not feeling very inspired. Well, I really believe that, but. I'll be honest, yesterday I was really not at all inspired. My garden looks weedy and tired, I. It worked again, even if a little bit late. Getting grass out of this bed was a major project. Or I had been thinking S...

Sprouts and Wildlings, A Virginia Garden Blog: Little birds and little bunnies

Sprouts and Wildlings, A Virginia Garden Blog. Sunday, July 8, 2012. Little birds and little bunnies. Kip, a very tiny Eastern Cottontail. White-throated sparrow (photo taken in December). Yellow-rumped warbler (photo taken in December). This is one of my greatest pleasures in gardening, and the prime reason I garden in the rather lax, wildlife-friendly style that I do. Sprouts and Wildlings, A Virginia Garden Blog: The Passion for Gardening - September Book Review

http://sproutsandwildlings.blogspot.com/2012/09/the-passion-for-gardening-september.html

Sprouts and Wildlings, A Virginia Garden Blog. Thursday, September 20, 2012. The Passion for Gardening - September Book Review. The Passion for Gardening is really a book for coffee-table garden book lovers. It has a few pages of practical matters (some information on propagating plants and source lists) but it is mostly just what the title suggests, an ode to gardening and gardeners. In fact, it's a little hard to say just what this book is about, so I will quote Druse from his foreword:. Do it your way.

Sprouts and Wildlings, A Virginia Garden Blog: Fragrance in the Garden, Another Ruling Passion

http://sproutsandwildlings.blogspot.com/2012/07/fragrance-in-garden-another-ruling.html

Sprouts and Wildlings, A Virginia Garden Blog. Thursday, July 12, 2012. Fragrance in the Garden, Another Ruling Passion. Oh, I'm so, so glad that the lightening bolt hit and I finally realized that I CAN have lilies in my garden! Then I talked to my green-thumbed hairdresser who casually mentioned the dozens of lilies she has growing in pots. In pots! Lilies are more strongly fragrant than anything else in my garden. I had noticed buds on the lilies in the morning before they first bloomed, but it wa...

The Hero Next Door

The Hero Next Door. Tuesday, 5 May 2009. For me this one felt a lil different, one because its such a lively track in comparison to most of my material I am singing, and second I'm not playing guitar in this track, I'm just doing the vocals which is rather cool as I'll be able to jump around a lil more. In the last week we also made a recording of "Dance" to use to film our music video, which we are hoping to record possibly this week. Our opening track : "Dance". Last track : "Out Of Control". White Way to Light

White Way to Light. Just a girl, being real, trying to find my way. January 26, 2012. I needed a break from my Granny marathon so I decided to 'play hooky' and whip up this cute cowl! It was super quick to make - it literally only took 1 hour and I think it turned out pretty cute! I got the pattern from the website Sew She Sews. It uses the techniques of front post and back post crochet and I love the ribbed look this technique gives! I'll let you know how it turns out! White Way to Light. They hold a no...
