It allowed for the spread of ideas that helped break down the apprentice/master relationship by teaching via readily available words, allowed for the democratization of knowledge which could be learned faster and further built upon by successive generations, and the speedy spread of ideas (e.g. Protestantism, The Wealth of Nations, etc).
