November | 2010 | The Kelsey Chronicles

Monthly Archives: November 2010. November 30, 2010. I went on a pilgrimage on Saturday. It wasn’t nearly as difficult as I envisioned a pilgrimage would be. When I think of a pilgrimage I think of struggling through the desert on my knees while self-flagellating. Today I took … Continue reading →. November 19, 2010. Blog at WordPress.com. Monthly Archives: January 2011. Surviving the Streets of Baku. January 18, 2011. When I first came to Baku on the CLS program, we were given a security briefing at the embassy. The gravest warning that was imparted to us was about the traffic. Azeris are nice people the officer giving the briefing … Continue reading →. January 3, 2011. Monthly Archives: June 2010. A Night at the Opera. June 26, 2010. For a country slightly smaller than the state of Maine, Azerbaijan certainly has a lot to offer. In the past two weeks I have seen both natural curiosities and fine art. One of our first group excursions was to Yanardag, … Continue reading →. Bad Teeth and Mercedes Benz. June 18, 2010. Newer posts →. August 27, 2010. My apologies for the time between my last blog post and now. I have had only sporadic and brief internet access since August 14. This is because on August 14. The latest chapter in my Caucasian adventure began. For three weeks I am accompanying Thomas Goltz, a journalist known by anyone who specializes in the region for his reporting on the conflicts in Azerbaijan, Georgia, and Chechnya. He is most beloved in Azerbaijan, his first book was. My life has been a blur. After t...

Two weeks ago I began my new job as an English instructor at Western University (Qerb Universiteti), a small private university located in Baku’s beautiful center. American Cultural Exports | Snyder Abroad
https://snyderabroad.wordpress.com/2010/08/05/american-cultural-exports
On the Road →. August 5, 2010. One of the more difficult aspects of being an American abroad is the constant cringing when you stumble upon a piece of American culture that has been been misinterpreted or taken out of context in another country. While some may say that cultural exports are a sign of. It has a limited effect when it is misunderstood or misappropriated. Name here in Azerbaijan, in terms of pronunciation and usage, there is a clear line of when a person is saying Nigar and nigger. As th...
Farewell Azerbaijan | Snyder Abroad
https://snyderabroad.wordpress.com/2010/08/10/farewell-azerbaijan
August 10, 2010. So this is the end of the road. I’ve still got some writing left to do and some photos to share that I’ll add after I make it home to New York, but tomorrow at 7:15a it’s wheels up and I’m out of here. There is a great interest in the United States and American culture and I have been very satisfied with how respectful Azerbaijanis are towards Americans. Many young people are now learning English in schools and American TV is beamed into almost all living. Leave a Reply Cancel reply.

Farewell Azerbaijan →. August 8, 2010. Traffic is a key part of Azeri culture. Like in many countries there is a deep vein of machismo that is reflected in how men here drive and the condition in which the car is kept. I had been warned before living in France to be careful of drivers there. Suffice it to say that drivers here in Azerbaijan are ten times wilder than drivers in France, making them a. Mercedes and Lada side by side. Meanwhile there are Ladas everywhere. The Lada is the archetypical aut...

Newer posts →. A Thousand Benevolent Smiles. July 28, 2010. Overlooking Azerbaijan is the executive branch, now led by Ilham. Aliyev. Prior to President Aliyev came President Aliyev, the father Heydar Aliyev. It goes without saying that there would naturally be portraits of the benevolent leaders nearly everywhere. I’ve included some of my favorites. On holidays like this, the late president’s face inhabits the upper right corner of every tv station as well. July 27, 2010. In fact, the whole system of te...

To be Jewish in Baku →. August 2, 2010. In addition to the routine agenda, sometimes it’s worth the students’ while to add some extracurricular activities. After all, these 7-hour bus rides and tours of Heydar Aliyev museums can become redundant and boring if there isn’t the right relief and respite. Thankfully Azeri consumer culture is there to help us when things get sticky. Ganja: Home of Europe's Largest Cake. 8221; Great success. Sun Flamboyant Power Wheels. Facing the Past →. To be Jewish in Baku. August 3, 2010. Anyone who knows me knows that Judaism is a large part of my identity. A Thousand Benevolent Smiles. Mischief in Ganja →. August 1, 2010. This past weekend, the group went to Ganja, Azerbaijan’s second most populous city, a six hour drive from Baku. The similarity of the city’s name to one of the many nicknames for marijuana is purely coincidental, though it is worth noting that a local folk dish is called xaş, pronounced hash (made of sheep hooves and brains, though unfortunately we didn’t eat any). In the evening, we got some Georgian wine, which is the sweetest and most ...

To be Jewish in Baku. American Cultural Exports →. August 4, 2010. Azerbaijan’s past has been marked with subjugation and foreign domination. Over the last 182 years, Azerbaijan has only been independent for 20, formerly part of the Russian Empire then the Soviet Union. Without the bitterness, the sweetness wouldn’t taste so sweet, one might be tempted to say. Yet Azerbaijan has not truly grappled with the past, denounced it and moved on. As a consequence of all these changes, in one family over three ge...

Wednesday, August 18, 2010. I totally want things to just HAPPEN! I'm in a great mood today and feel like I'm getting a lot accomplished, but at the same time feel SO unproductive! I can't stand it. My to do list is SO long and I'm slowly getting things done, but my company is having a REALLY hard time getting started. Much harder than I thought! I know it's because I have a very low inventory, but I'm working on it! Inspirations don't come plentifully! I guess I just wish life was easy! To work with you.

The Kelsey Chronicles | Musings from abroad.
February 25, 2011. One of the most enjoyable aspects of living with an Azeri family is learning and living firsthand the various traditions of Azerbaijan. The following are some of my favorite:. 1 If you leave a clean plate, having wiped all the grease away with your bread, then you will marry someone beautiful. 2 If your tea has bubbles, you must take the bubbles and put them in your hair. This will bring money in your future. (I think this one might be Russian in origin.). Surviving the Streets of Baku.

My Life in a Nutshell
My Life in a Nutshell. I was diagnosed in 2011 with Crohn's Disease. My goals are to heal with food and earn my degree in Nutrition so I can help others do the same. Monday, July 13, 2015.
