Thoughts from the Armchair: What Do You Control?

http://www.thekiddoctor.blogspot.com/2008/11/what-do-you-control.html

Thoughts from the Armchair. Tuesday, November 4, 2008. What Do You Control? There is an important principle that is implied in my last post that I need to clarify: the issue of control between parents and children. I have had many patients ask me “how do I get my child to make the right choice? But may include things like access to their parents’ “stuff” such as use of TV’s, computers, permission, etc. John D. Livingstone, Ph.D. I think I try and overcomplicate everything. It's always nice to be remi...

Thoughts from the Armchair: So, Whose Fault is it?

http://www.thekiddoctor.blogspot.com/2008/10/so-whose-fault-is-it.html

Thoughts from the Armchair. Wednesday, October 29, 2008. So, Whose Fault is it? In my work, I am often asked the question “How often are the problems that the children are having the fault of the parents? Another fun way of looking at it is an example of a child making a mess in their room (or any other room for that matter; even the best, most attentive, aware parents have kiddos that make messes! Is it the parent’s fault the child made the mess? No, but the parent often ends up directing the child to c...

Thoughts from the Armchair: ADHD

http://www.thekiddoctor.blogspot.com/2008/11/adhd.html

Thoughts from the Armchair. Thursday, November 20, 2008. Once a child has been properly diagnosed by a qualified professional, an appropriate treatment plan can be proposed and implemented. The best approach is usually a combination of medication, behavior management, family treatment, and educational interventions. Failure to utilize treatment may lead to emotional distress for the child, peer problems, behavior problems at home, school, and the community, school failure, and family distress.

Thoughts from the Armchair: Rules for Parents

http://www.thekiddoctor.blogspot.com/2008/11/rules-for-parents.html

Thoughts from the Armchair. Thursday, November 13, 2008. In my last post, I noted that parents are responsible for setting rules and consequences for their children. Well, many parents don’t know that there are specific “rules for parents”. Paul Jenkins, PhD, one of my supervisors and a good friend listed these four rules for parents:. 1) Take care of yourself. 2) Take care of the team. 3) Love your kids. 4) Discipline your kids. John D. Livingstone, Ph.D. November 15, 2008 at 8:27 AM. I love this post!

The Right Not To Be Bullied: NARCISSIST in positions of authority

http://therightnottobebullied.blogspot.com/2008/12/narcissist-in-positions-of-authority.html

Saturday, December 6, 2008. NARCISSIST in positions of authority. Are narcissists in position of authority more likely to take advantage of their patients/students/subordinates? It is in these two crucial points that narcissists differ from other humans. As far as the narcissist is concerned, there is no moral dimension to abusing others – only a pragmatic one: will he be punished for doing so? The narcissist's personality is so precariously balanced that he cannot tolerate even a hint of criticism and d...

Tuesday, March 25, 2014. Finding My Way Home. I have been thinking about this post for a while. I didn't know exactly what I wanted it to say. Did I want it to be short and sweet? Or long and detailed? I've sat in bed at night and thought about how I would write this before dozing off to the next day. Enough thinking. I'm sitting here without any sort of idea how this will turn out. I'm letting my fingers do all the work. And "who's church are you going to attend? And then I woke up . I just remember sit...

The Kiddos and Us

Wednesday, July 31, 2013. This is our new house in Alaska. (No, we didn't take that picture. The Northern Lights have yet to show themselves to us. Or maybe we just haven't been awake when they've been out. Anyway, this is the photo that our landlords took to lure us in. It worked.). It is gorgeous and bigger than our last house, which makes the move-in SO much easier. I didn't even cry when I unpacked the kitchen (yes, that's unusual. Kitchen organization really stresses me out). Wednesday, July 24, 2013.
