According to the military, "those who in some way have been associated with survivor of trauma may also become traumatizd and experience what is called secondary traumatic stress disorder (STSD), or compassion fatigue.". Some children of veterans have this disorder. The Kids of a Veteran. Vietnam veterans with PTSD are three to six times as likely to divorce than Vietnam veterans without PTSD. Veterans diagnosed with PTSD, compared to those without PTSD, are more likely to be violent with partners and children, with rates as high as 63% for some type of physical violence in the past year. PTSD can be hard, and STSD can be as well. Please look through these resources, and try to find competent help for both you, your veteran, and your children.
