Rich's Kili Blog

This is the account of our 5-day trek to the highest point in Africa - Mt. Kilimanjaro, Tanzania. 2006 Family in Zanzibar. Friday, 17 November 2006. Mt Kilimanjaro, Tanzania. October 30 - November 3, 2006. For many years I’ve thought about climbing. The name sort of conjures up exotic images – some blend of high altitude mountaineering and the African bush. I thought I might do it at some point but the time and cost had kept it prohibitive. To be honest, it was one of the draws to my move to. There was c...

http://richsfamilysafari.blogspot.com/2006/11/safari-adventure.html

Here is the blog of my family's safari in the Northern Circuit of Tanzania. The account and photos are in chronological order. 2006 Zanzibar with Family. Saturday, 18 November 2006. Thursday, November 9. Day 4 - Serengeti back to Arusha. The next morning we woke up, had breakfast and loaded our stuff into the Land Cruiser. We braced ourselves for the long drive ahead. The hope was that we’d be offered views that weather prevented us from having two days prior. It was a beautiful scene and quite rare.

The Zanzibar Weekend: Saturday, Nov. 10

http://richsfamilyznz.blogspot.com/2006/11/saturday-nov-10.html

This is the account of my family's visit to Zanzibar. Events are listed in chronological order. Thursday, 23 November 2006. Saturday, Nov. 10. The next morning we were off to Prison Island. I’d been there a year and a half ago and I thought renting a boat, snorkeling, seeing the tortoises, etc. might be a fun excursion. Though the weather was a bit sketchy during the day, we ended up having a fun outing. The island had changed considerably since I’d been there with the development of a hotel. We complied...

Here is the blog of my family's safari in the Northern Circuit of Tanzania. The account and photos are in chronological order. 2006 Zanzibar with Family. Tuesday, 21 November 2006. Tuesday, November 7th. Day 2 - Ngorongoro Crater to Serengeti. The next morning we got a much earlier start due to the long day ahead of us. We had to visit the Ngorongoro Crater, cross to the other side, drive to the Serengeti, cross it and arrive at our lodging just out of the park on the northwest side. The temptation to fo...

Here is the blog of my family's safari in the Northern Circuit of Tanzania. The account and photos are in chronological order. 2006 Zanzibar with Family. Tuesday, 21 November 2006. Wednesday, November 8. Day 3 - The Serengeti. After a good night’s sleep, we were off on the safari trail. It was nice to leave our stuff in the rooms and know that we were coming back to the same place. We also would keep a much more relaxing pace given that we didn’t have as much ground to cover. It’s a sight we’...The wilde...

The Family Safari: Sunday, November 5

http://richsfamilysafari.blogspot.com/2006/11/introduction-and-arrival.html

Here is the blog of my family's safari in the Northern Circuit of Tanzania. The account and photos are in chronological order. 2006 Zanzibar with Family. Tuesday, 21 November 2006. Sunday, November 5. I’d been reading about this for quite some time and I’d heard numerous stories from colleagues and friends. Over time it. Began to crystallize in my head what I wanted to do given the amount of time we had. The other family members that would join were in Kenya for a few days before coming to Tanzania.

The Zanzibar Weekend: Introduction - Friday, Nov. 9

http://richsfamilyznz.blogspot.com/2006/11/introduction-friday-nov-9.html

This is the account of my family's visit to Zanzibar. Events are listed in chronological order. Thursday, 23 November 2006. Introduction - Friday, Nov. 9. When I was trying to figure out how my family should spend their time in Tanzania, I initially thought of a Kilimanjaro climb and a safari in the Northern Circuit. Those were a no-brainer. The question that came to mind was whether or not to tack on something else, fearing that it may be too much. Freshly showered and rested, we had breakfast and heade...

The Family Safari: Monday, November 6

http://richsfamilysafari.blogspot.com/2006/11/day-1-lake-manyara.html

Here is the blog of my family's safari in the Northern Circuit of Tanzania. The account and photos are in chronological order. 2006 Zanzibar with Family. Tuesday, 21 November 2006. Monday, November 6. Day 1 - Lake Manyara. Lake Manyara isn’t that far from Arusha so we really didn’t need an early start. We did get on the road before 10:00am with our guide, Naimen, as our escort for the next several days. Naimen was a fairly quiet guy for a guide. Our vehicle was the standard green Land Cruiser. Some are a...
