Wilderness Photographer: Where the Great Plains Meets the Rockies
http://wildernessphotographer.blogspot.com/2015/08/where-great-plains-meets-rockies.html
Friday, August 7, 2015. Where the Great Plains Meets the Rockies. Wyoming is a fantastic state. It is big, scenic, and almost empty. The views here are big, as is the sky. One of my favorite views is the edge of the plains one finds here. You can find that view in other states but it is usually less empty than Wyoming. Here the view can seem to go on forever. I really like that sight, seeing the mountains rise right out of the grasslands of the plains. It is a perfect view to photograph. You can contact ...

Wilderness Photographer: Snowy Range Sunrise
http://wildernessphotographer.blogspot.com/2015/08/snowy-range-sunrise.html
Friday, August 14, 2015. After being up half the night photographing the Milky Way I had crawled into the tent about 1:30 in the morning. By 4am I was back up and headed back out for sunrise. The stars were already fading and a few clouds were already picking up very early light. I suppose I should mention that it was July and I was bundled up with a fleece top as well as my down jacket, hat and gloves. It was 37 degrees. Quite the change from July in Texas. Wilderness Photographer: Ancient Volcano Nightscapes
http://wildernessphotographer.blogspot.com/2015/06/ancient-volcano-nightscapes.html
Friday, June 26, 2015. The western side of Big Bend National Park has a volcanic past. Much of the geology is volcanic in origin and there are several examples of volcanic dikes, cores, and tuff to view. These areas are neat to explore and photograph anytime, but I think they take on a whole new dimension at night. The light of the Milky Way shining over ancient volcanic rocks gives the scene a very primordial feeling. And also back in the Spring of 2014. I like the area so much I went back a second nigh...

Wilderness Photographer: Ancient Fire Ancient Light
http://wildernessphotographer.blogspot.com/2014/06/ancient-fire-ancient-light.html
Thursday, June 12, 2014. Ancient Fire Ancient Light. One of the distinct features on the western side of Big Bend National Park is Cerro Castellan. This solitary peak is visible over most of the western half of the park. It is a volcanic core from an ancient volcano. The rest of the mountain has been eroded away by time but the solid core is still standing tall. It is one of many volcanic features on this side of the park. I have photographed this peak several times. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

Wilderness Photographer: January 2015
http://wildernessphotographer.blogspot.com/2015_01_01_archive.html
Tuesday, January 27, 2015. The Chisos Mountains are the heart of Big Bend. A sky island in the desert, they are a higher, cooler, and wetter place than the low desert around it. The mountains, have pines, maples, and the southern most aspens in the US. The are home to rare birds like the Colima Warbler. They even host a population of black bears. It is a very neat range that is both fun to explore on foot as well as photograph from the surrounding desert. If you can guess-I like WIDE lenses! Then later t...

Wilderness Photographer: Secret Slot Canyon
http://wildernessphotographer.blogspot.com/2015/07/secret-slot-canyon.html
Thursday, July 2, 2015. Last year I had been looking at Google Earth around some areas of Big Bend National Park when I spotted something that I thought might be a narrow canyon. It was! I explored it in 2014 and covered it here in my blog Secret Slot Canyon. This spring I returned to the canyon to again explore what it had to offer. Although I am sure a few others have walked through it, I have never seen it mentioned in any publication nor images posted from it. So I put the little kit lens as well as ...

Wilderness Photographer: Rocky Nightscapes of Big Bend
http://wildernessphotographer.blogspot.com/2015/07/rocky-nightscapes-of-big-bend.html
Wednesday, July 8, 2015. Rocky Nightscapes of Big Bend. The Big Bend night sky is amazing. It is a dark location that is a long way to a city. It is a great place to see and photograph the night sky. It is also a place of dramatic mountains, interesting rock formations, and deep canyons that all can make interesting photographs. When you combine those interesting ground locations with those dark skies you can get some fantastic nightscape images. Luckily, Big Bend has a lot of rock formations. This year,...

Wilderness Photographer: July 2015
http://wildernessphotographer.blogspot.com/2015_07_01_archive.html
Sunday, July 26, 2015. One of the great off the beaten path mountain locations is the Snowy Range of southern Wyoming. Incredibly scenic with easy access and basically no crowds. Imagine an area with steep granite peaks rising right out of pristine alpine lakes. It's the type of location you normally have to backpack for three days to get to. At the Snowy's that is 50 yards from the parking lot. How can something super scenic like this not be jam packed with people? Darkness takes a long time to arrive t...

Wilderness Photographer: Balanced Rock
http://wildernessphotographer.blogspot.com/2014/06/balanced-rock.html
Wednesday, June 18, 2014. Just north of the Chisos Mountains in Big Bend National Park is a small range of rocky hills known as the Grapevine Hills. They are an igneous intrusion into the sedimentary landscape. Here the rocks are dramatic shapes and are a very interesting area to both hike and photograph. The most famous of the rocks is the Balanced Rock that seems an improbable balancing act. A one mile trail leads to the Balanced Rock and it is a popular destination with hikers and photographers. This ...
