Hiking Poles Are Not For Wimps | the late bloomer hiker
http://thelatebloomerhiker.com/2013/05/10/hiking-poles-are-not-for-wimps
The late bloomer hiker. Adventures in hiking…. Hiking Poles Are Not For Wimps. Not the best spot to use poles…. Cooling the trekking poles off near Mount Laguna. One of the reasons I took up hiking was to get some exercise. Using the same math as before, imagine lifting your trekking poles even 5,000 times on a hike. At an average of 10 ounces each, that’s over 3,700 lbs of lifting. Wow, who needs a Nordic Track? Not exactly carbon fiber, but they lasted over 750 miles. Some other uses for trekking poles:.

The late bloomer hiker. Adventures in hiking…. Where You Pitch Your Tent Matters. Big Pothole Lake on the Kearsarge Pass Trail. Thinking that someone was wandering around our site, I listened for the footsteps. Nothing. The light continued to shine, barely moving. Maybe I left a flashlight in my pack and it came on. A few minutes later, I gathered enough courage to unzip the door and peek out. The fullness of the moon lit up our tent as it crested the mountain to our east. Will that Fiat sized boulder up...

The late bloomer hiker. Adventures in hiking…. Never Trust a Marmot. A marmot sunning above Thousand Island Lake on the JMT. The hike today had been a long one. The John Muir Trail was all that we had expected and more. Imagine Ansel Adams pictures in living color. Those sneaky pests found my pack and were checking it out. Yellow-bellied marmot, Yosemite NP. I yelled “Hey, get outta here! It seemed like it took forever to reach my pack and I was worried now that they ripped it open trying to get to my fo...

The late bloomer hiker. Adventures in hiking…. How to Lose Your Toenails When Hiking. Time to cool off those feet! Another thing that you can do to keep your toenails is to trim them. Trim them like you normally do and you should be fine. Don’t pull your black/blue nail off, let it fall off naturally. If you do let it progress naturally, you may find a fresh, new nail underneath. This process could take several months! March 25, 2015 Categories: Hiking. Hiking and Camping Tips. Has some good selections t...
Food Choices When Hiking in the Backcountry | the late bloomer hiker
http://thelatebloomerhiker.com/2015/03/24/food-choices-when-hiking-in-the-backcountry
The late bloomer hiker. Adventures in hiking…. Food Choices When Hiking in the Backcountry. A backcountry trip requires quite a bit of planning and food is a major part of it. There have been many innovations in the area of dehydrated food. I’ll discuss some suggestions for other foods that may work for you on the trail and a few that may not. Makes quality meals. My favorites are grilled chicken breast with mash potatoes, lasagna with beef and beef stroganoff. Some meats and fish. Nuts or Trail Mix.

America the Great North. Skip to primary content. Skip to secondary content. Monthly Archives: March 2015. March 9, 2015. I once heard a Godly, anointed speaker say that you can tell the health of a church by their worship. That is all he really said. He didn’t define what that looked like or even unpack his statement. I’ve been chewing on that for almost 2 years now. What is worship? What moved King David to spend all his wealth on a house of praise for God? What touched them so deeply? Let us make a jo...

Gulkana Glacier. In a word: “Amazing”. July 28, 2015 · 2:24 pm. Gulkana Glacier… Try, Try Again. We waited for a good weather day, and packed for a 2 day overnight trek. This time, after we crossed the suspension bridge, we stayed alert for a trail to the right, which we hoped would enable us to ascend to the peak of the moraine and get past the the unstable end moraine and the creek coming out of Gulkana – success! Rugged Landscape on the Moraine. Once-Upon-a-Time Mud Now Rock. Tent Camp Behind Moraine.

Cross Canada Plains to Alaska 2015. Gulkana Glacier. In a word: “Amazing” →. July 22, 2015 · 12:04 am. Birding and Blooming on the Denali Highway. On our last trek to Alaska, we somehow missed the Denali and Richardson Highways and the region called the “Interior”. Yah I know. I don’t know either. Our plan this time is to spend more time in different regions, settling into an area and really exporing it for a week or two, rather than just cruising through and skimming the surface. The Richardson Highway ...
