The Great Hall of Fashion. Chloe Graham photographed by Prue Ibbotson. Home to Massey University’s fashion design school, the old Museum’s Great Hall was a fitting place to host Wellington’s first Fashion Week, with runway shows from 32 designers, established and emerging. From the gauzy, metallic bodices of Hermione Flynn. Through to the rich enveloping brocade of Liz Mitchell. The work of the makeup artists led us through the delicate, then into sweeps of tribal marking/war paint for the Taylor Boutique.

Street Style: the Chapman Version. 8220;I love all aspects of photography,” says Wallace Chapman, “and the way I found my own voice was in street style”. Chapman uses a Leica camera. It looks old-fashioned, in fact, almost 1950s. It isn’t a giant piece of equipment sprouting long lenses and flashguns, and helps to make the subjects relaxed and interested in the story developing. Chapman prefers using natural light, and the lenses he uses offer magnificent sharpness. And The New Old. Links to this post.

Into Wonderland: Trelise Cooper in Wellington. Since it went up in 1906, the old Public Trust building on Lambton Quay has always fascinated with its Florentine-Edwardian architecture. Here is a full display of the polished granite, marble, limestone and red brick so beloved by the period’s best architects—the delicious Baroque notes, the little decorative surprises, the feeling that here is something special. The new Trelise Cooper. Towards the back of the shop are the dressing rooms – big, glorio...

Halo Dress is from Derryn Schmidt’s summer collection. The fabric is a tightly woven silk-cotton, providing a background for colourful print work and some subtle details like the run of pin-tucking down the spine. The print is a tumbling design of big peony/chrysanthemum blooms among cascades of cool coloured petals. It is serenely suggestive of oriental lacquer work and the imperial colours of oriental hand painted porcelain. Links to this post. The jacket is called ‘Kiss my Asp’. The pa...

Iamkatythomas Fashion Week: #TheFutureIsNow. Photo by Wallace Chapman. At New Zealand Fashion Week. I’ve been attending New Zealand Fashion Week. For some 8 years now. Next year will be my 9. Not that I would have been aware of any of this finer detail in 2003. Luckily, I wasn’t a fashion reporter. Photo by Max Lemeshenko. Which is why I find it curious that half my invites this year were addressed to Katy Thomas. Links to this post. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). View my complete profile.
