Informed, insightful and irreverent commentary on politics and life. About The Left Coast. Increasing Calls for Ban of Flavoured Tobacco Products. BC youth and New Democrat health critic Judy Darcy are calling on the B.C. As a youth myself, I am disgusted that we are letting tobacco companies get away with marketing these products to young people by making them taste and smell...

Vancouver: A Local's Perspective: May 2011
http://bcrobyn.blogspot.com/2011_05_01_archive.html
Saturday, May 21, 2011. Brewery Creek Beer Festival - US. My first trip to the Armoury aka: the Beatty Street Drill Hall was a week ago Friday for the Brewery Creek Beer Festival - US as a part of the Vancouver Craft Beer Week. Imagine 20 or so American breweries serving craft beer in a giant drill hall. that was my Friday:. The orange blossom ale was intriguing. The Kentucky bourbon barrel ale was delicious. Re-up BBQ was there - they make amazing pulled pork sandwiches. Wednesday, May 11, 2011. Practic...

Thursday, February 24, 2011. Free Fred Herzog photography exhibits at the Equinox Gallery. Coal Harbour circa 1959 - photo by Fred Herzog. It's hard to believe that's what Coal Harbour looked like in 1959. It almost looks fake, but it's not. I mean, heck! Did Georgia Street really look like Kingsway back then? The photo is Fred Herzog's. It's one of the many Herzog photos featured at the Equinox Gallery. On South Granville. Herzog's work is featured in two exhibits at the gallery: Reading Pictures. Comme...

Saturday, June 25, 2011. Last night was the preview of the Cheaper Show 10 at a temporary venue set up on the corner of Kingsway and Broadway, just across the street from Our Town Cafe. The Cheaper Show is an art show where every piece is selling for $200. It's a way for artists - local and international - to showcase their work, while also providing art lovers with a way to purchase art without going broke. It's also a bit of a who's who of the Vancouver art scene, as always. Saturday, June 18, 2011.
Vancouver: A Local's Perspective: August 2010

Tuesday, August 31, 2010. Return to the Kootenays: Creston. I'm blogging from the last few hours of August 2010 in beautiful downtown Kaslo (in the Kaslo Hotel. No less) where the power in the entire town went out for 10 minutes about an hour ago. You don't know darkness until you're in a remote mountain town during a blackout. Come back to the Kootenays. And so here I am, one week later, not even, and I'm back in the Kootenays. Who knew I'd back here so soon? My destination this time? Of course, I was d...

Quintessential East Van scenes. Wednesday, November 3, 2010. And so Gordon Campbell resigns. I am by no means a political expert. Not even close. It's pretty embarrassing, and with exception to a passionate few, I'd say that the average Canadian, at least here in BC, is equally perplexed when it comes to local politics. The thing w...

Thursday, March 31, 2011. Sunday, March 27, 2011. Japanese plum blossoms outside my parent's house. Right now - this very week, even - is my favourite time of the year. I blame it on the cherry blossoms. There's something, almost like a pheromone, that gets released into the air when the cherry blossoms are in bloom, and it speaks to me at some sort of primal level, and all I want to do is go outside and bask in the gorgeousness of spring flowers. Monday, March 21, 2011. When I was invited to attend.

Sunday, January 23, 2011. PuSh Festival's La Marea. I accidentally stumbled upon the surreal film set-like performance, La Marea, on Water Street Thursday night. As explained by the Georgia Straight. More information at www.pushfestival.ca/. Needless to say, it made Gastown even more photogenic than it already is. Wednesday, January 19, 2011. Reflections of Haida Gwaii. Sunday, January 16, 2011. Sunday, December 26, 2010. I have been a busy girl. 2010 was a prolific year for yours truly as far as concert-going activities go. I'd like to say I don't keep track. The problem is, I do. Thursday, October 28, 2010. Deerhunter at the Rickshaw. I make no secret that I dabble in concert photography for fun. It comes in waves. sometimes I can go an entire month without a show, and at other times (read: October), there are shows every second evening. Maybe it's the Bladerunner-esque facade:. If you're reading this, you're probably already familiar with Deerhunter, but if you're not, here's one of my favourite tracks:. Wednesday, October 20, 2010. Pixar comes to Vancouver. And at the airport.

The Left Captain
Diary of a Left Captain in a Right World. Saturday, February 14, 2009. It's been strange coming back to the US after two months in Army-World followed by six months in Afghanistan. Endless days of anxiety, PT, preoccupation, and future-orientation were replaced with lightning fast days of happiness, listening to my kids, over-stimulation and a world that is much much faster. But it's a new year. People don't get it. I get that. I would rather think that they don't get it versus thinking that ...The USAF ...

Informed, insightful and irreverent commentary on politics and life. About The Left Coast. Energy Program Won’t Offset 28% Hydro Hike. The BC. Liberals’ new energy program won’t do enough to help families who are struggling to afford the Liberals’ 28 per cent hydro rate hike, say the New Democrats. A more effective way of helping low-income families was proposed by Horgan in the spring legislative session with the Hydro Affordability Act. The act would have given the British Columbia Utilities Commis...

An outside-the-Beltway perspective on current events, politics, media, and the arts. We are proud to be part of the Reality-Based Community. Thursday : Mar 30, 2017. Heading Down The Drain. Disregard what I said yesterday about a likely renewed White House/GOP effort to blow up the Affordable Care Act: Trump has managed to lose the support of both the Freedom Caucus. So does Trump really want to deal with repealing the ACA or not? I think not. Furthermore, the House GOP slides further into a civil war.
