Labyrinthus: August 2010
http://labyrinthus.blogspot.com/2010_08_01_archive.html
Monday, August 23, 2010. A View of Mount Shuksan. At some point I heard my name being called. An excited convert, I stumbled back to the clearing. “You’ve got to see this, it’s unbelievable! You’ve never seen anything like it in your life! 8220;Come and see.”. I lead the group, who abandoned our still-preparing meal, through the brush and dramatically held aside some branches. “Look! They crowded past me. “What? Abba Evagrios, one of the Fathers of the Egyptian Desert sixteen hundred years ago, told his ...

Labyrinthus: May 2011
http://labyrinthus.blogspot.com/2011_05_01_archive.html
Saturday, May 28, 2011. The local chapter of the Multiple Sclerosis Society asked me to speak this week on the spiritual and psychological impact of chronic pain to both sufferers and their families. I’m not interested in chronic pain at all. Perhaps because I don’t suffer from it, but mostly because I don’t understand it. I’m not now and have never been interested in things medical. That kind of stuff bores me. They want me to speak again. Occasionally, Twain does. Address the question of the authorship...

Labyrinthus: Compromising the Gospel
http://labyrinthus.blogspot.com/2010/10/compromising-gospel.html
Tuesday, October 26, 2010. Some of the things Jesus said to His disciples, if taken literally, would so upset the way the world works we wouldn’t recognize it. They would overthrow the way we've set up everything. So we have to find a way to acknowledge what He says while allowing ourselves not to take His words too seriously. 8220;If someone says bad things about you, say only good of them. Don’t return evil for evil.”. 8220;If someone slaps you, let them slap you again without slapping back.”.

Labyrinthus: Father Sanchez' Challenge
http://labyrinthus.blogspot.com/2011/05/father-sanchez-challenge.html
Thursday, May 19, 2011. 8220;To everything there is a season,” wrote the grim-toned author of Ecclesiastes. Lent has passed, Easter has come, the time to sing Alleluias. This past Lent I spent in the desert—and a good many friends accompanied me. I followed the abbas. Into to fiery furnace of desert piety, even if from a distance. I lived with them through their words. The Sayings of the Desert Fathers. My great and good friend, Fr Robert Sanchez, wrote me a week or so after Easter saying, “I was h...

Labyrinthus: The World Turned Upside Down
http://labyrinthus.blogspot.com/2010/12/world-turned-upside-down.html
Friday, December 24, 2010. The World Turned Upside Down. The Babe lying in a manger, the lowing cattle and wooly sheep, the rustic shepherds, the radiant Mother and the protective father—it’s the Christmas scene of countless cards and nativity displays—the stock icon of the season. In Jesus, God reveals Who He is. What does a phrase like that mean? What a wonderful reflection, Fr! And Ive put you in my intercessions for a bit while you get the leg working!
