The Lents Farmer

Tuesday, July 21, 2015. New Orleans Botanical Garden. My gracious hosts in New Orleans were nice enough to indulge my inner garden nerd yet again and took me to the New Orleans Botanical Garden. City Park has been around since 1854, making it one of the nation's oldest urban parks and the botanical garden has been open since the 1930's. The main building with oaks. View to the Conservatory of the Two Sisters. As kids (Alison and Alan) spent a lot of time in City Park, especially the adjacent Storyland.

The Lents Farmer: June 2015

http://thelentsfarmer.blogspot.com/2015_06_01_archive.html

Wednesday, June 10, 2015. American Aquatic Gardens and Gifts in New Orleans. While in New Orleans, my hostess Alison introduced me to American Aquatic Gardens and Gifts. Located at 621 Elysian Fields, New Orleans, LA 70117. They are just on the edge of the French Quarter. We just so happened to be on our way to French Quarter Fest when we stopped by. This place has everything and it is all wonderfully displayed. Everything is a feast for the eyes, so much fun stuff and so many colors. Lan Su, in Autumn.

The Lents Farmer: February 2015

http://thelentsfarmer.blogspot.com/2015_02_01_archive.html

Wednesday, February 25, 2015. Patio Project - Part One. One of the first things I did when I bought my home in 2006 was to dig out the sad grass and the Concord grape vine behind the house and make a vegetable garden. It was my own private "victory garden" and I was "King of the Veggies" and rewarded for all my labors. I was growing far more than I could ever use, or give away. At a certain point in the summer, you can no longer give away zucchini. NOBODY wants them! The estimates I asked for from differ...

The Lents Farmer: May 2014

http://thelentsfarmer.blogspot.com/2014_05_01_archive.html

Wednesday, May 28, 2014. I admit that I love my "Homie Gnomes". What's a "Homie Gnome" you say? They are Gnomes but they are "hipster" Gnomes. How can you not love a Gnome wearing a leather coat and a wallet chain or Gnome with a skateboard? They seem like such a "Portland" thing to have. Pants on the ground" Gnome. The Lents Farmer mascot. I recently came across some options for future garden tchotchke additions. Let me know what gets your vote! Assistant Yvette could have posed for this? I was also qui...

The Lents Farmer: Shedteau Yvette

http://thelentsfarmer.blogspot.com/2015/07/shedteau-yvette.html

Tuesday, July 14, 2015. With the removal of my big veggie garden this year and the patio replacing it, it was also time for a new garden shed. The old rusted aluminum shed needed to go. It was looking pretty bad. One rainy Sunday morning, with the help of some friends and a few loud "hulk smashes", the old shed was a goner. It only took a few weeks for them to pre-fab it and then they pulled up in their truck on the scheduled day and installed it in one day. Exterior painted to match the big house. After...

The Lents Farmer: August 2014

http://thelentsfarmer.blogspot.com/2014_08_01_archive.html

Monday, August 25, 2014. It seems odd with my love of big, crazy, and bright flowers, that I don't have many Dahlias. There were a few Dahlias that were discovered in my yard when I moved in many years ago, but I neglected them. They were planted in too much shade, so they stretched for the sun, and toppled over. They never bloomed, so I had no idea what color they even were. I purchased two Dahlia tubers ('Mingus Art' and 'Melqua Nebula') this year from a display of Old House Dahlia. Melqua Nebula' - On...

The Rainy Day Gardener: Visit to The Netherlands

http://www.therainydaygardener.com/p/visit-to-netherlands.html

Organically Growing in the Willamette Neighborhood of West Linn, Oregon - Zone 8b. Visit to The Netherlands. In the summer of 2013, I finally journeyed to The Netherlands to visit my families roots. My Opa and Oma, along with my mother, immigrated in the mid 1950's from Nunspeet, Gelderland, first to Ontario, Canada and then to the USA, finally settling in the Pacific Northwest. We felt right at home and it was hard to say good bye. Here are the blog posts in which I share my visit:. Pacific NW Bloggers ...

It's Wednesday Vignette and I'm joining Anna over at Flutter and Hum. In celebration of a scene that made me stop to ponder this week. My kids took advantage of our recent trip to Costco. It appears the card board boxes are perfect ships for playing in the sea of grass. Childhood innocence and the sweet pleasures of imaginative play. Wednesday, May 20, 2015.

Organically Growing in the Willamette Neighborhood of West Linn, Oregon - Zone 8b. Saturday, August 8, 2015. Early August Vegetable Garden Update. Here at the Rainy Day Garden, we've had.no.rain.at.all (ok.truthfully, 1 day of rain). I've been wrangling the garden hose all summer and with good results. The weather, while dry, has been perfect for watermelons, cucumbers and tomatoes. I have 6 - 7 good sized pumpkins that are just now beginning to turn orange. It's amazing how much those pumpkin vines ...

Organically Growing in the Willamette Neighborhood of West Linn, Oregon - Zone 8b. Wednesday, July 29, 2015. Wednesday Vignette - Summer Heather. On this late Wednesday in July, we are enduring another heatwave here in the Portland, Oregon greater region. I was outside, braving the furnace and took a second look at my calluna vulgaris 'Firefly'. Wow, this plant! The chartreuse foliage is quite striking in contrast. It's an amazing plant, with true, year round interest. Head over to Anna's blog. I braved ...
