The Liberal Conviction

Thursday, September 30, 2010. Marty Peretz and the Intent/Effect Principle. Crossposted from the HPRgument. Funding high quality undergraduate research is an important institutional need, obviously. Equally obvious is the fact that what Marty Peretz wrote (“Muslim life is cheap, most notably to muslims”) is grotesque and wrong. Those two points, at the very least, are utterly clear. The Liberal Conviction: Notes on Fiorina's Paper

http://theliberalconviction.blogspot.com/2010/08/notes-on-fiorinas-paper_14.html

Saturday, August 14, 2010. Notes on Fiorina's Paper. Stanford Professor Morris Fiorina wrote a paper. In 2000 called "Extreme Voices: A Dark Side of Civic Engagement." A friend recently sent me this article as "counter argument" to my own work (work on CommonPlace, etc). After reading it, I'm here to say: totally I disagree. In fact, there's no incompatability between the Fiorina's claim that there's a "dark side" to opening more channels. Let me try to explain. What is going on here? Civic engagement - ...

The Liberal Conviction: The Rich and the Very, Very Rich

http://theliberalconviction.blogspot.com/2010/08/rich-and-very-very-rich.html

Friday, August 20, 2010. The Rich and the Very, Very Rich. James Surowiecki has a New Yorker article. Out that makes a very reasonable point - namely, that there's a big difference between being a doctor or a lawyer or an entrepreneur or, say, a prominent journalist at the New Yorker, and being a millionaire. Our tax code should reflect that distinction. It doesn't.* Let's make it. Whom am I prepared to work for? Does the immiseration of the poor matter, and how much? Now, there is. That indicate that th...

The Liberal Conviction: Weighing In: China and the Race to Green Tech

http://theliberalconviction.blogspot.com/2010/08/weighing-in-china-and-race-to-green.html

Wednesday, August 11, 2010. Weighing In: China and the Race to Green Tech. That the idea of a “race” between China and the United States over green tech (suggested by Will Rafey here. Is misguided. Clean energy anywhere benefits everyone, everywhere. If there are no losers, then why call it a “race”? Yet the fact is. I bristle when reading that China is beating the United States. But that doesn’t exactly answer the question: Is the “race” construct “unconvincing”? Does it matter if China takes the lead?

Liberally Conservative

Debate and discussion regarding today's top political news. Thomas J. Pyle: Obama-Reid Oil Tax Huge Jobs Killer. A funny thing happened during the ongoing debate over raising the debt ceiling. President Obama and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid have drawn a line in the sand, insisting that raising taxes on American oil and gas companies will somehow reduce the deficit and therefore must be part of the final equation. After all, it is only fair, they insist. Posted at 12:31 PM in Economy. The debt-limit...

The Persistence of Difference in Warhol’s Marilyn Diptych. The sheer magnitude of Warhol’s 1963 masterpiece Marilyn Diptych. Yet one notices, when the awe subsides, upon further inspection of the large Marilyn Diptych. Warhol, along these lines, is frequently cited as saying I like boring things. I like things to be exactly the same over and over again. If you look at something long enough, I’ve discovered, the meaning goes away. (Wrenn 16). In an interview he responded to this:. From this exchange we ge...

My father has been involved in the political arena in some capacity for my whole life and now serves as a Mayor of New Bedford, Massachusetts. Growing up, I was lucky to experience conventions and inaugurations, but my favorites were the many JFK Library events and dinners that I would go to. This is what makes Senator Kennedy unique.
