Word Art: A Creative Lesson on Characterization & Symbolism - The Literary Maven

http://www.theliterarymaven.com/2017/01/symbolism-characterization-lesson.html

Word Art: A Creative Lesson on Characterization and Symbolism. January 06, 2017. The inspiration for this project came from seeing an image of the mockingjay pin. From The Hunger Games. Created out of words. My students were reading The Hunger Games. At the time and I wanted to have them create something similar. I looked at sites like Wordle. Which let you create word clouds, but neither had the flexibility in shapes that I was looking for, so this project ended up being no-tech. Lennie is very curious,...

Week two with the Hobart crew | Text adventures in popular culture

https://simonclowes.wordpress.com/2016/08/31/week-two-with-the-hobart-crew

Text adventures in popular culture. Week two with the Hobart crew. On Tuesday I ran the reflection which I think went well. Graham did PD on herding cats and the need for routine and rhythm. This I thought very useful particularly the idea of shifts which need to be noted and demarcated for participants. This struck a resonant chord with the dramatist in me. All in all another very busy and thought provoking week which may well have far reaching ramifications for our lives. Leave a Reply Cancel reply.

Leaving for Hobart | Text adventures in popular culture

https://simonclowes.wordpress.com/2016/08/14/leaving-for-hobart

Text adventures in popular culture. So we are finally on our way. Again not a unique problem but one that I have also wrestled with of late. The cats are in the carriers and although they are relatively calm they have definitely been aware that something is going on and I think that it is fair to say that they weren’t overly impressed. There is a screaming child behind us and I hope that the cats are not feeling as restless as that child. The cats travelled well and although they were a little cautious o...

Five for Friday- March 18th. Friday, March 18, 2016. Hey, hey, hey! I'm linking up again with Doodle Bug's Teaching. To share 5 little snippets of my week. After a mini freak-out over papers and messiness everywhere, stuff literally overflowing from students' cubbies, I whipped up a few reward coupons. A few months ago, after being fed with the amount of plastic grocery bags we had lying around, I ordered a couple of reusable tote bags from Baggu. We worked together to get ourselves set with goals and vi...

Text adventures in popular culture. First week at the Flexi. We have been enjoying the rhythms and routines of the Hobart Flexi. The challenges they face are significant and the puzzles of how best to manage resources, time and staff to achieve the best possible results for the young people. As always I find the young people engaging and if these ones are anarchic and a little too Lord of the Flies for my liking then the challenge falls to my practice. Bring it on!
