One look outside showed numerous fires had been set in our small village of Zrnovci. All indications were that our tiny village was poised to burn to the ground…I got back into bed and covered my head. It was Ajvar making season. If flowers in the Zrnovci River Canyon in Macedonia had personalities they might be described as delicate but stubborn and hardy. How else could they possibly survive in such a severe environment? Some sprout out between cracks in rocks and others occupy a space behind blades of grass and other plants. This spattering of color up the Canyon enhances an already striking landscape.
