The Making of a Yogi. One asana at a time. January 26, 2014. Now that I just turned 50 and am perched on the cusp of a new decade, I decided to revisit yoga. Ten years ago, I discovered Iyengar yoga and immediately loved it. Prior to my first class, yoga seemed strange and esoteric to me, but then I realized yoga was basically stretching. The Making of a Yogi. One asana at a time. Laquo; Starting with Om. When the Timing is Right. There’s no place like Om. January 30, 2014. Except that Om at home feels self-conscious. Why? Sitting on my mat in my living room, I prepare for yoga with a couple of breaths and then breathe more deeply, letting go of the exhale, gearing up for Om, but, instead of the robust, energizing sound in class, out comes something squeaky and weak. I sound like a yogi with laryngitis. Why can’t I get the Om out?

I feel 100% safe here. Everything is very clean – lots of pride. The days and nights are evenly split with sunrise and sunset both at 6:30 in March (cool! All the restaurants add 15-20% to your bill for tax and service. It’s VERY easy to hemorrhage money here if you’re not careful. Dress for heat and humidity!

No matter where you stay in Bali, you will likely see advertisements for a sunrise hike to the top of Mt. Batur – the most active volcano on the island. I recommend taking the tour from Ubud or wherever you are staying rather than traveling to Kintamani for the trek. This was such an adventure! With the light of day, the monkeys emerge! They are after your food and are very tricky.
