The Minutes of a Dory Build. Neu Woodworks meets the whitewater dory. From our wharehouse/shed/den in Valdez, we set off in our friend Jeff's truck enroute to McCarthy, AK. About 2/3 of the way through the trip we pass over the Kuskalana River which we would eventually see again as it emptied into the Chitna River just downstream of our last night's camp. By the time Gail and the clients arrived we were close to being done with the gear transfer and rode back to the airport to set up camp. Meanwhile the ...

The Minutes of a Dory Build. Neu Woodworks meets the whitewater dory. Driftwood Drift Boat Timelapse. Links to this post. Driftwood Dory Construction: Hull Assembly. The hull came together just like the plans said they would. Things pretty much lined up without adjustments needing to be made. "That 'll do.". The cross-boards helped to keep the frames flush with the bottom chine. My rafting strap kit came in handy for holding things together while the frames were fastened to the hull with ring nails.

The Minutes of a Dory Build. Neu Woodworks meets the whitewater dory. Fixing the Boat 2. The Zizumara is getting ready for the epic snowmelt that is gonna be racing down our mountains. Most of the patching has been done, the oar locks are bolted into place and the gunwales are looking good. Here is a little recap of the repair project. This is a view of the bottom of the boat. Note the hairline smiley face crack. You might think, no big deal. Not a bad hit at all. The zone where the new texture and old t...

The Minutes of a Dory Build. Neu Woodworks meets the whitewater dory. Day 43: Deck Fairing. Faired the deck today. well, most of it. Ran out of epoxy with about 25% left to go. Used the phenolic microballoons again. They sand down so easily that I really like using them despite the fact that they are a little tricky to work with when wet. Decided to go with a thick coat of fairing instead of my usual super thin method. Hoping to cut down on the number of coats this way. 1 The gutters are pretty big to sh...

Monday, November 1, 2010. North Dakota in a Blizzard? Scranton, North Dakota. Jay and Tom were crazy enough to go out in what was billed as North Dakota's worst storm in decades. In Zeek's bar/restaurant. Just about the only place to eat in town. These photos were taken in Montana on the Yellowstone River. Posted by Denise (and Tom). This time of year, the colors all of the way were beautiful - bright yellow, orange, deep red - especially against the Yellowstone River and the stark landscape.
