August 3, 2015. Anxiety is the most common emotional disorder in the US, affecting nearly 40 million, or 18%, of the population. Notice I said Emotional Disorder, not Mental Illness. That’s because I do not actually view anxiety as a mental illness. Before you go searching for your burning pitchfork, hear me out. Anxiety is a normal emotion. It happens as a reaction to when our brain senses that we are in danger. And now, the $64,000 question why does this become a problem for some people and not others?
