The Messier Pro: May 2012
http://messierpro.blogspot.com/2012_05_01_archive.html
Tuesday, May 29, 2012. There is just one week left until the transit of Venus across the Sun. I will very shortly have more specific information for a variety of places across the world, but if you wish to order special equipment for viewing the transit, you should probably do that as quickly as possible! Saturday, May 19, 2012. Safely Observing the Sun (Partial Eclipse Tomorrow). Timing on the Eclipse:. It counts as an annular eclipse! How To Look At The Sun:. If one does give advice, if the advice is i...

The Messier Pro: Supermoon (! or ?)
http://messierpro.blogspot.com/2013/06/supermoon-or.html
Friday, June 21, 2013. What is a little more notable is that both of these are happening on the same day. Since the Moon is at its closest point, the Moon will appear a little larger in the sky than it usually does, and therefore a little brighter. How much of a difference will this make? On this diagram, the Moon's orbit is sketched in red, while a perfect circle is sketched in blue. While the difference is not gigantic, it is there, and it does affect the "Supermoon". (Should I capitalize that? Causes ...

cook out of the box: The End
http://cookoutofthebox.blogspot.com/2011/07/end.html
Cook out of the box. Practical, inspirational and occasionally irreverent advice on how -and why- to prepare satisfying meals using foods from SE Minnesota - especially seasonal fruits and vegetables from Featherstone Farm. Peggy has over 250 cookbooks so you don't have to. Wednesday, July 6, 2011. Sometimes creative people just need to set off in a new direction. I can't help it. I'm a Gemini. Let's give Michelle Obama a hand, okay? I also would like to thank Margaret Marshall, the CSA manager, for her ...

The Messy Apron Extras: About The Messy Apron
http://aboutthemessyapron.blogspot.com/2009/04/what-messy-apron-is-all-about.html
About The Messy Apron. I'm Anne Marie. Welcome to The Messy Apron where I record my messy little kitchen adventures in southeastern Minnesota. I'm a home cook (not a professional) and I love to write about ingredients, recipes and flavors. There are photos here as well, but I'm not a professional at that either, so I hope they are at least somewhat appetizing and helpful in illustrating my points. If you would like to contact me, please do so via email at amleckenby (at). Or leave a comment.

The Messier Pro: September 2011
http://messierpro.blogspot.com/2011_09_01_archive.html
Friday, September 16, 2011. This blog has not been updated in an uncharacteristically long stretch because of personal pressures with the beginning of a new school year, and my move to a new house, with an actual backyard - a backyard that has a line-of-sight to zero streetlights, instead of the eight at the apartment! I hope that I don't become what I criticized (in backyard astronomers who assume everyone has good skies) now that my situation has improved! Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Astronomy Sites fo...

The Messier Pro: Day 1: I Cheat, Still Lose
http://messierpro.blogspot.com/2012/06/day-1-i-cheat-still-lose.html
Friday, June 22, 2012. Day 1: I Cheat, Still Lose. For the first object on my Big Year. At least pass one of it), I decided to pick the Sun, which is fair - it's in the sky! I won't spend much time talking about how to find this particular object, as it is usually pretty easy to find. In any observation of the Sun, as I did with my post on the Transit of Venus, it is pretty much required to say *DO NOT OBSERVE OBSERVE THE SUN WITH MATERIAL THAT IS SPECIFICALLY BUILT FOR LOOKING AT THE SUN! When this happ...

The Messier Pro: Solstice Announcement
http://messierpro.blogspot.com/2012/06/solstice-announcement.html
Wednesday, June 20, 2012. I recently saw the (in my opinion, greatly undervalued) film, The Big Year. And that gave me an idea. I am going to use my astronomy blogs to attempt my own "Big Year". In the movie, the main characters are birders, who attempt to see as many different birds as they can during the course of a calendar year. I am going to attempt to see (and report on) as many different things as possible in the sky over the course of a year. In the meantime, Happy Solstice! NASA, for Students.

The Messier Pro: Hercules, or "There?", "No, next to it", "There?", "Kinda"
http://messierpro.blogspot.com/2010/06/hercules-or-there-no-next-to-it-there.html
Wednesday, June 2, 2010. Hercules, or "There? No, next to it", "There? Hercules is a constellation of fairly dim stars surrounded by brighter constellations. One might consider just skipping over these stars, but there are some beautiful binocular and telescope objects located in this constellation (the subject of my next post), and these objects make the hunt worth the wait. These objects will also trigger the start of what I am modestly) calling the " Leckenby. Only to discover that I am. Versions from...

The Messier Pro: August 2013
http://messierpro.blogspot.com/2013_08_01_archive.html
Monday, August 19, 2013. The headline refers to the appearance of a newly visibly star in the tiny constellation of Delphinus the Dolphin - it has nothing to do with the Miami Dolphins' new logo. Seriously, what the heck. On August 14th, Japanese astronomer Koichi Itagaki. Delphinus is a small constellation, and it does not have any bright stars, but it is still relatively easy to find. Here is a view of the summer triangle. The Greek letters, as I have explained before. Are one way to identify stars wit...
