Working The Boy Scientist, one project at a time. Skip to primary content. November 9, 2013. Welcome to The Mom Scientist. Here are some things you might have missed since my last post. Calculus would be more valuable to me than any grade I would earn in a class. I have put off writing this post because I was really hoping that things would have turned out differently, and I could happily and triumphantly report that not only had I passed calculus, I had aced the final, gotten the best grade in the class...

Goodness knows there are other factors involved.). I might also now have time to do the things that settle, calm, restore, and inspire me. Bookish | The Mom Scientist

Working The Boy Scientist, one project at a time. Skip to primary content. January 2, 2013. A Quilted. Card. Catalog. I’m not worthy! It just looks like a kiosk, doesn’t it? I just ordered five geeky books from Amazon, after I made the remarkable discovery that some people are willing to sell a used copy for one penny that goes for more than $100 new. Try it search Amazon for textbook, and sort from low to high. Check it out. Amazing, isn’t it? So I bought…. I said I bought five items. I did. You are com...

Free speech is not anonymity, and vice versa | The Philosophical Primate

Ideas, arguments and rants. Free speech is not anonymity, and vice versa. Free speech is not anonymity, and vice versa. In which I comment at Butterflies and Wheels. On the important moral distinction — which a large segment of the internet seems to have entirely missed — between the justification for protecting free speech and the justification for protecting anonymity. Not that my comments at B&W are long, but here’s an even shorter version:. 2012/10/20 at 2:15 pm. Yes This (as they say). Freedom o...

Education IS a panacea. Sort of. | The Philosophical Primate

Ideas, arguments and rants. Education IS a panacea. Sort of. Education IS a panacea. Sort of. In this week’s. Chronicle of Higher Education. John Marsh argues with great clarity and insight that, as the title of his essay declares, education is not an economic panacea. I say his article is clear and insightful, and I’d go even further to say that the conclusions he draws are correct — but that there is a broader sense in which he is wrong. In terms of educational and economic policy, we may have even put...

Ideas, arguments and rants. In the news…. Suddenly, world events have made Sam Harris’ unwise attempt to rescue his torture argument and my criticism of it ( see prior post. And Andrew Sullivan rips apart the lies. A commenter here and numerous facebook friends have also directed my attention to this interview with a professional military interrogator. Somehow, I missed this Forbes interview with a current top U.S. military interrogator in Afghanistan. Who says that…. Torture played no role in locating O...

Averting American self-destruction | The Philosophical Primate
https://thephilosophicalprimate.wordpress.com/2012/10/14/averting_american_self-destruction
Ideas, arguments and rants. This Sunday NYT article. Focuses on the over-arching problem that will, in time, destroy our nation as it has destroyed so many in the past — unless we have the courage and foresight to fix the problem. What is the problem? That was the future predicted by Karl Marx, who wrote that capitalism contained the seeds of its own destruction. And it is the danger America faces today, as the 1 percent pulls away from everyone else and pursues an economic, political and social agen...

Ideas, arguments and rants. Appealing to privilege is no longer a winning political strategy. Appealing to privilege is no longer a winning political strategy. When a party LOSES seats in a year where they had the opportunity to re-draw districts in their favor in significantly more states than their opponents, they are clearly doing something wrong. (For some seriously nerdy wonkery on 2011 redistricting/reapportionment and how it theoretically. Have helped Republicans, see here. But this isn’t ju...

Ideas, arguments and rants. Life’s real value. Life’s real value. The ever-interesting Eric McDonald has been writing a series of blog posts ( one. So far) criticizing arguments against assisted dying on the basis of “the sanctity of human life,” and further criticizing the very idea that life is “sacred.” Inspired by his conversation, I’d like to go considerably further, and argue that not only is human life NOT sacred, human life. On this view, Eric was being redundant when he claimed, in his third post.
