The Mortlach View: Mortlach Fiddlers

http://themortlachview.blogspot.com/p/mortlach-fiddlers.html

As you turn off the Trans-Canada Highway toward Mortlach, you are greeted by a sign proclaiming the village, “Home of the Mortlach Fiddlers.” For over 20 years the Fiddlers played in Mortlach and throughout Saskatchewan. They remain a proud part of Mortlach's history. 8220;That's really one of the good memories I have,” said Elaine Haukaas, their daughter. “In my bedroom there was a great big register that the heat would come up, and I could look down there and see them playing.”. It wasn't until Rowe an...

The Mortlach View: Crocus Ridge Art Gallery

Crocus Ridge Art Gallery. Local Art Flourishes in Mortlach. The unassuming exterior of Crocus Ridge Gallery hints nothing of the treasures that are housed inside. The little white building, which dates from 1910, is an old Anglican church. It is a part of the history of the village of Mortlach, and now hopes to be a vital part of its future. When the Anglican church closed its doors in 2002, one of its parishioners, Donna Cowell, purchased the building and donated it to the town of Mortlach. 8221; Marily...

The Mortlach View: Photo Art Canada

http://themortlachview.blogspot.com/p/photo-art-canada.html

Life in the wild. The first to meet me at the door of Photo Art Canada’s upstairs loft apartment were Bexter and Pricilla. The two felines zig-zagged in and out of my legs, as I made my way to the couch to start my interview with photographer David Krughoff and his wife Sherri. David is a wild life photographer. He has been taking pictures since he was a child, but it wasn’t until he retired that he got deeply involved with animal photography. David smiled when he told the story of where this love began.

the 163: Haunted history in farmhouse

http://the163.blogspot.com/p/haunted-history-in-farmhouse.html

Haunted history in farmhouse. 8220;I looked up and I just got cold.”. 8220;Oh my gosh. I was scared.”. When Candis Kirkpatrick moved into an old farmhouse outside of Mortlach, she had no idea what she was getting herself into. Kirkpatrick and her husband moved into the farmhouse in 1969, shortly after the couple got married. That year and for the next four years, Kirkpatrick would experience things that would make most people’s hair stand on end. 8220;Everything started to fall into place,” she said.

the 163: The Mortlach Jets

http://the163.blogspot.com/p/mortlach-jets.html

A window into the fall of men's softball. Their proud image is slowly being wiped from the prairie landscape. Each rural Saskatchewan settlement once boasted at least one, but years of neglect and decline are quickly changing them into artifacts of the past. It is no secret that men’s softball teams are slowly slipping away from Saskatchewan towns and villages. 8220;It was a big deal. We’d have a big crowd all day, with ball and beer gardens and hamburgers” laughed Gardner. The team seemed to survive as ...

the 163: Icons of the past

http://the163.blogspot.com/p/icons-of-past.html

Icons of the past. Twenty-three trains pass through Mortlach each day. The old Mortlach train station sits in a cluttered, overgrown yard. Some windows are broken while stacks of Zonolite Ceiling Insulation block the view from another. Ornate arch beams support the roof’s overhang. Christmas decorations and chairs litter the plywood path leading to the doors. Decrepit yet elegant, the building is now owned by Norman Dixon, 86, and it functions as an “antique shop.”. the 163: Mortlach Museum: More than antiques

http://the163.blogspot.com/p/mortlach-museum-more-than-antiques_29.html

Mortlach Museum: More than antiques. The Mortlach Museum is housed in the old fire hall. Located just off Rose Street, the Mortlach Museum has been helping its community piece together their history since 1979. 8220;There's so much history there.". For Searle, preserving the legacy these items leave behind is what her job is all about. Even though Kouri was new to the area, the village asked him to be museum president in the summer of 2010. For Kouri, antiques don’t make history, the stories be...In the ...

the 163: Artifacts have continental importance

http://the163.blogspot.com/p/artifacts-have-continental-importance_29.html

Artifacts have continental importance. 8220;The whole sequence has been found in the Mortlach area, right from when the people who dropped the (Clovis) points were probably seeing the edge of the glaciers to virtually what we see today,” said Walde. Clovis points, Walde explained, are the first recognised indicative points found extensively across North America. They are tools from the late ice age Clovis culture. Their existence proves that people have been in Canada for a long time. Bernie Forbes, a re...

Once a thriving town, Keeler now sits empty. By Devin R. Heroux. You can still send mail to Keeler,. But there may not be anyone there to pick it up. Red faded letters can barely be made out. The resemblance of a village sits still, almost frozen in time, waiting for all those people that once lived there to come back home. 8220;To give you an exact number of people living there is tough. I think there are about 12 people picking up mail at the post office these days,” says Ken Purdy. March 31, 2003.

The Mort Mommy | Life as a SAHM in Funeral Service

Life as a SAHM in Funeral Service. About The Mort Mommy. June 2, 2015. June 2, 2015. I had a four day break. From parenting and from work. It was so rejuvenating and glorious that I am having trouble finding the words to describe how great it was. Don’t get me wrong, I love being a mom and I enjoy what I do for work. That said, I think that everybody needs a break every once in a while…. But he went with me anyway. He’s fully trained. House trained. Trick trained. Leash trained. May 29, 2015. May 29, 2015.
