First impressions of Ruhengeri in the northwest of Rwanda where I would end up going back to live for 4 months. One of the lovely things about this part of the world, is that people really have time for each other. Most Rwandans will see their friends every day – whether it be to discuss business ideas, family matters, the latest election propaganda or simply to stand around and shake your calabash. Vultures on the lawn of Ruhengeri Hospital. Virtually impossible to dry washing at this time of year!

Sunrise over the sand dunes at Soussevlei. The morning light made the dunes look like computer-graphics from the 80’s. Going for a long hot walk in the desert to find the Salty Deadvlei (dead saltpan). A small settlement heading north along the Skeleton Coast from Swakopmund. Attempt at capturing a mirage on camera. A day after arriving in Uganda, we met a girl called Amina and her younger sister Jenati. Amina had dropped out of school to work as a Kayak instructor in order to feed her mothers huge family. First bus trip, first breakdown. The roads through Masai Mara in Kenya provide good business for 2nd hand tyre firms. Flies are one thing I’ve never been able to stand, but the flies on this bus were by far and away the worst I’ve seen anywhere. An infant next to me was been happily breastfed with about 20 of them crawling over her mouth and eyeballs. I was amazed every day from here on in by the patience African children display at such an early age. First sighting of a giraffe through the tree-tops.

Rwanda does not have a lot of jobs. But it does have a lot of orphans. As a way to survive the kids do odd jobs such as hanging around the markets in the hope that someone will need heavy bags of shopping carried. Their family are all struggling together to find work to get enough to eat each day. Classes will resume once things have settled down for them. May 10, 2011 · 10:04 am.
