Birds – The Natural History of Australia

http://thenaturalhistory.net/category/birds

Exploring the natural history of Australia. The Natural History of Australia. All posts filed under: Birds. Over New Year we had a trip down to Jindabyne in the Snowy Mountains. We stayed in a beautiful spot on the shores of Lake Jindabyne and were treated to plenty of birds singing and flitting around the house. Several Fairy Wrens spent the week dancing in a tree at the front of the house and Honeyeaters flew back and forth among the branches. The birds of Jervis Bay. Blog at WordPress.com.

I did however spot a number of things, such as this Australiasian Pipit (. Although one of the most common birds in Australia, this is the first one I’ve ever seen. They nest in grass cups, usually under bushes, and are found across Australia and even into PNG. I may have to concede defeat on this one I think. Fill ...

Net-Casting Spider – The Natural History of Australia

http://thenaturalhistory.net/2015/02/01/net-casting-spider

Exploring the natural history of Australia. The Natural History of Australia. I spotted this spider while walking back into the house from our patio, lurking above the door. On closer inspection it turned out to be a Net-Casting Spider (Deinopis sp.). It belongs to the family Deinopidae, a group of spiders that have long, thin bodies and two large, wide, forward-facing eyes. The abdomen of this species has two humps mid-way down the abdomen (see picture below) that give the body a strange look.
