Storage Archives - Virtual Ramblings
http://thenicholson.com/category/storage
Musing of a Storage guy in a Virtual World. Posts from the ‘Storage’ Category. Virtual SAN performance Service: What is it? And what about these other things). One of the newest exciting features of Virtual SAN 6.2 is the new performance service. This is an ESXi native performance monitoring system with API, as well as UI access. Now why would you want to deploy VSOM if this turnkey simple, low overhead performance system is native? Quite a few reasons:. VSOM allows for rolling up performance information...
The long awaited HDS "Year Z" post. - Virtual Ramblings
http://thenicholson.com/long-awaited-hds-year-z-post
Musing of a Storage guy in a Virtual World. The long awaited HDS “Year Z” post. By John Nicholson on May 8, 2015. HDS has been on a long journey that has led us to “Year Z”. Almost four years ago the road map leaked to The Register. That HDS would eventually merge their Modular (Then AMS, now HUS) with their Enterprise (VSP, now VSP G1000). The promise of a single block operating system, with a unified file, object, branch NAS and block management suite was a long way off. I’ve loved the HUS for pr...
Is your SAN ready to format itself with Windows 7? - Virtual Ramblings
http://thenicholson.com/ciscoinvicta-san-ready-format-windows-7
Musing of a Storage guy in a Virtual World. Is your SAN ready to format itself with Windows 7? By John Nicholson on May 8, 2015. Quick warning. While rebooting an array for an update I noticed that it was configured to roll through 4 NIC’s worth of PXE on the boot order. If you have a PXE imaging server on the same subnet as one of the NIC’s this could cause the boot to hang, or worse if really misconfiguration re-image your array and destroy your data, or access to your data. VMworld Day 1 - Virtual Ramblings
http://thenicholson.com/vmworld-day-1-part1
Musing of a Storage guy in a Virtual World. By John Nicholson on August 25, 2014. I’m looking forward to this week and here are a few highlights of what I’ll be looking into. 1 Settling on a primary load balancing partner for VMware View. (Eying Kemp, anyone have any thoughts? I’ve got a number of smaller deployments (few hundred users) that need non-disruptive maintenance operations, and patching on the infrastructure and are looking to take their smaller pilots or deployments forward. Will they add mor...

http://thenicholson.com/the-vsan-build-part-2
Musing of a Storage guy in a Virtual World. By John Nicholson on October 14, 2013. I got the final parts (well enough to boot strap things) on Thursday so the building has begun. A couple quick observations on the switch, and getting VSAN up and ready for vCenter Server. 3 It will negotiate 10Gig on a Cat5e cable (I’m going to go by Fry’s and get some better cables at some point here before benchmarking). Its trivial to setup a single host deployment. First create the VSAN. Esxcli storage core device list.

Quick Question on VSAN vs XtremIO Architectures – nigelpoulton.com
http://blog.nigelpoulton.com/quick-question-on-vsan-vs-extremio-architectures
A former big-iron guy now containerized and re-written in Go! Quick Question on VSAN vs XtremIO Architectures. February 5, 2015. This is just a really quick one……. I noticed that upgrading an existing VSAN to the newly announced VSAN 6.0 is a non-disruptive rolling upgrade. Fair enough, so it should be right? So with that in mind…. I think an online rolling upgrade is fairly impressive. Well done to the VSAN team. So If VSAN Can Do It Why Can’t Others? Is the VSAN architecture superior? Here come the *re...
How doomed is NetApp?
http://storagemojo.com/2015/04/13/how-doomed-is-netapp
Contact & About. How doomed is NetApp? Monday, 13 April, 2015. The current turmoil caused by plummeting cloud storage costs, new entrants sporting modern architectures and the forced re-architecting due to flash and upcoming NV memories is a perfect storm for legacy vendors. Some are handling it better than others, but some, like IBM and NetApp, appear to be sinking. Last month and the company folded the development effort into the ONTAP team. NetApp has well-known problems integrating acquisitions into ...

VSAN Is No Better Than a HW Array – nigelpoulton.com
http://blog.nigelpoulton.com/vsan-is-no-better-than-a-hw-array
A former big-iron guy now containerized and re-written in Go! VSAN Is No Better Than a HW Array. October 20, 2014. One of the major topics we discussed in last weeks episode of The In Tech We Trust Podcast. Was VSAs vs VSAN. And I think it’s a pretty interesting topic. VSA’s Commoditize the Hypervisor. The way I see it, the VSA approach offers more choice, more competition, and is ideologically superior. But VSAN has Advantages. That all said, I recognise that compared to a. But VSAN is Hypervisor Lock-in.
