March 14, 2011 · 11:57 pm. My mouth had been watering all day for the shrimp meal I planned to make tonight. I had taken them out of the freezer to thaw on Saturday afternoon, so the shrimp have only been in the fridge for 2 1/2 days. They didn’t have an unusually fishy smell as I peeled them but as soon as I started to cook them I knew something was wrong. There was this strong scent of ammonia! If you smell ammonia while cooking shrimp- throw them out immediately! So, it’s salad for me tonight : (.
