Teaching middle school math. Monthly Archives: December 2013. December 5, 2013. The #msmathchat this week was on apathy. Apparently my students follow me on twitter because Wednesday they decided to challenge me with some major apathy which lead to some epic speeches. Seriously, if only they were recorded because we are talking award winning. Basically, I had two different issues going on. For you @JustinAion, maybe it will actually make a difference! Teaching middle school math. December 2, 2013. Just a quick post- we started a unit on percents today. Found this activity. From Illuminations, but I needed it to be a little bit more. The activity takes the BMIs and weights of season 14’s contestants and students need to find the percent lost for each in order to find out who won the game. We then had a discussion on why the show does not award the prize to the person with the most weight lost, but the highest percentage. December 3, 2013 at 12:05 am.

Teaching middle school math. March 21, 2013. Surface Area and Volume- Skin and Guts. Today we did one of my favorite activities- Skin and Guts. It is from an AIMS book- Effects of Changing Lengths. I love AIMS products and I highly suggest checking them out if you haven’t already. The kids are given nets of 3 rectangular prisms. They create 3 people- One Man, Two Man, and Three Man. I also had one of those great teaching days when I felt like so many connections were made and the kids were working on an ...

Teaching middle school math in Idaho ho ho. Pondering The Meaning of Selfish. 8221; He said, “Because there are a lot of people who are just trying to get by.” I got all choked up and wondered, “Am I selfish? Why was I doing what everyone else was doing? Who would ever want to have to stand on a corner and ask strangers for money unless they were really down and out? Yesterday as I was heading home from TMC14. How long would it take him to get home? Okay, so then I thought of TMC14. You are commenting us...

Tech Adventures in a Middle School Math Class. Monday, March 24, 2014. Click on the image above to open the PDF. On Friday, we learned the basics of slope - how to find slope from a table or a graph. Today, I wanted to reinforce the concepts and help them make the connection between the table and the graph, so I designed an app-smashing activity for my students using Desmos. Tapped share and saved the image to the camera roll again. It sounds like a lot of steps, but everyone did well with the process...
