Will think for food. Apr 23, 2015. I share James’s defense of the liberal arts in his post a couple weeks ago. But I have mixed feelings about the promises professors sometimes make on behalf of them. One promise is that prospective employers “look at” your writing ability and ability to think critically. Another promise is that a liberal arts degree will be “useful” in the business world. A job But getting. How much do people actually make such promises? I also remember only half-believing those “...

Blogs & Categories. State of the Discussion. Blinded Trials Bait: An Ethics Quandary. November 18, 2012. I had an exchange at a large retailer this weekend that made me question some of the struts in my own ethical framework. Intellectually, I’m having a hard time piecing together whether my ethical instincts are on sound footing, or if I’m just telling myself a story to make myself feel better about being Evil Tod. In order to do this, I have to tell you two personal anecdotes. And of course, after stop...

In the end they will lay their freedom at our feet and say to us, 'Make us your slaves, but feed us.'". The Prince, Part 8 (Chapter 8). 8220;Of Those Who Have Attained the Position of Prince by Villiany. Ol’ Nick, to refer to our author by his demonic nickname, finds villainy* somewhat problematic, but not terribly so. His appraisal seems to lie more in how. An example makes clear what Machiavelli means by villainy:. Posted by James Hanley. Links to this post. The Prince, Part 7 (Chapter 7). John Howard ...

In the end they will lay their freedom at our feet and say to us, 'Make us your slaves, but feed us.'". The Death of Positive Liberty Redux. Positive Liberty has died again, and this time I believe it's for good. We've been having some technical difficulties that repeatedly make our site inaccessible, and no one can figure out what the problem is. However we're sticking together and planning to regroup under a completely new name. I'll keep you posted. Posted by James Hanley. Links to this post. But the ...

Blogs & Categories. State of the Discussion. The 500kth Ordinary Comment. May 5, 2015. This is crucial because, as almost anyone will tell you, only America ultimately can broker peace in Palestine. This is because the deep economic, military and diplomatic investment of the United States in Israel gives us the power to deeply influence Israeli policy moving forward. I think this is absolutely correct. Testing, testing, 1, 2, 3. Above is t he very first ever comment on this site. Stop and think for a mom...

Aug 9, 2015. To students who consider studying them. But my debt-free education was also due to state subsidies. Cibolia State University gave me scholarships (probably supplied by taxpayer money, but I don’t know). Those paid for most of my tuition, leaving me responsible only for room and board. And one reason those scholarships were sufficient to pay my tuition was because the state limited the rate the university could charge. Click to share on Google (Opens in new window). To read about F's and my London trip, start here. And click "newer post" to continue the story. Friday, May 18, 2012. OK, so we woke up Thursday morning and had breakfast at the hotel. They had a breakfast buffet that included grilled tomatoes (delicious at breakfast) and mushrooms cooked with butter, I think (really delicious! Looking at F, she said. "How old is your daughter? When I responded, "Twenty-five," she jumped. Links to this post. Thursday, May 17, 2012. And I got held up because the people in...

To read about F's and my London trip, start here. And click "newer post" to continue the story. Sunday, December 16, 2012. Next installment on the London trip. Sunday morning we went to Kensington Palace. Getting there was kind of difficult b/c the website. Gives directions to the nearest tube station but it's kind of vague after that. Somehow we couldn't see it. We asked a couple of passers-by and got non-helpful answers but finally somebody told us to go through an alley and there we were. Some tapestr...
