Built in 1842, The Old Lockup served first as a magistrate's house and then as a police station for 100 years. Just after the Great War D. H. Lawrence and his German wife Frieda rented a cottage just down the road in Middleton and had to report here weekly as Frieda was listed as an alien. It was around this time that Lawrence wrote the short story A Wintry Peacock (published in 1921), which is set in the immediate locality.
