Rob's World: Talking with James Blake at BR
http://rjamesyork.blogspot.com/2010/08/talking-with-james-blake-at-br.html
A Tennessean far from home . Saturday, August 28, 2010. Talking with James Blake at BR. Earlier this month, Bleacher Report arranged for me to have a telephone interview with James Blake. Since the news had a lot to do with the US Open, I've held it until now. On Monday the event will begin, and that night Blake will be honored for having overcome childhood illness and a series of harrowing events in 2004 to have become a top-ranked tennis player. If I were to take a random sampling of opinions in my hometown, asking about 20 or so people, What do you think when you hear the word ‘Italy? I suspect I’d get the following results:. A Tennessean far from home . Monday, October 09, 2006. North Korea Can't Be Ignored Now. I woke up at about 1:30 pm and, out of habit, visited the New York Times web site, where the lead story said that North Korea was now claiming a successful nuclear test. The first thing I said out loud probably would look unsophisticated in print, but nothing else seemed appropriate at the time. Yes I did. I think it’s a big problem. So what did you do today before you came to this institute? Since yesterday afternoo...

A Tennessean far from home . Sunday, November 27, 2005. A row of men in dark suits. The second watches the first. Give away his hand. And get a smaller one in return. The second man thinks. As do many others. That this is the denouement. But it’s actually In Medias Res. The second man watches. As the hands start joining,. As the plans start forming,. And he nods approvingly. The second man, once named best. Sees the hands stop joining,. Sees the plans start breaking,. And wonders if he deserves the name.

A Tennessean far from home . Saturday, February 24, 2007. No habla el idioma. Since I started teaching English in Korea, I’ve lost track of how many times students have asked me, What is the best way to learn a foreign language? At this point in my teaching career it has become my staple response to pause thoughtfully for a moment before saying Study for a certain amount of time and then try living in that country for awhile. I am using quotation marks with learn because I, like most of the other males w...

A Tennessean far from home . Friday, April 28, 2006. So How Was Your Day? Ho-hum. I met my students Jin Hee and Da Mi today, went to a traditional folk village, took in a cock fight, got put in a Korean prison and received an archaic form of corporal punishment for my misbehavior. I can't wait to leave Korea; nothing interesting ever happens here. Posted by Rob @ 4:22 AM 1 Comments. Wednesday, April 26, 2006. Even More Pics (pt.3). Oh dear . I just made myself sad. A Tennessean far from home . Saturday, November 04, 2006. Teaching Does Have Its Advantages. Is it harder to be a student or a teacher? If you had asked me that question in my senior year of high school, I probably would have blinked at you momentarily and maybe yawned. I was, after all, a high school student still trying to recover his energy after having listened to multiple semi-geriatric-aged individuals in dress shirts with too many buttons explain calculaic vocabulary for 90 minutes at a time.
