The Orthosia Enthusiast: December 2012

http://theorthosiaenthusiast.blogspot.com/2012_12_01_archive.html

Moths and Moth Trapping in North Northumberland. Sunday, 2 December 2012. Its a while since I posted on here. Since the last post I have done some trapping into late November, catching mainly December Moths, with a few Winter Moth, Chestnuts and Angle Shades etc. Now Christmas looms upon us I am giving the trap a wash and tidy, and using the end of the year as the 'close season', ready for 2013. Unless there is a particularly mild spell that is. See you in the New Year. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).

http://theorthosiaenthusiast.blogspot.com/2014/07/busy.html

Moths and Moth Trapping in North Northumberland. Sunday, 13 July 2014. 14 degrees, the busiest night of the year so far. Two new species for me - 1358 Evergestis pallidata and 1876 Small Yellow Wave (Hydrelia flammeolaria). Later after a time in the fridge I tried to get some pics and totally fluffed the Wave, it flying off without so much as a snap of it. I hate it when 'firsts' go unrecorded for posterity : (. 1314 Pearl-band Grass Veneer. Coleophora species (Coleophora sp.) 10. 0937 Agapeta hamana 2.

Birds and a brew. Bit of this, bit of that, with a brew to top it all off! Wednesday, 1 January 2014. Mental Mega Trip (part 3) Ushuaia and south. After arriving in Ushuaia we spent a day relaxing and mostly just wandering along the waterfront near the hotel. Just outside the hotel we found Black-faced ibis, Magellanic steamer duck, Crested duck, Chimango and Crested caracaras, Magellanic and Blackish Oystercatchers, Austreal Negrito… etc. Not bad at all! Crested caracara mobbed by Southern Lapwing.

Birds and a brew. Bit of this, bit of that, with a brew to top it all off! Wednesday, 28 May 2014. What's happening at St Abb's Head. Peak seabird season is fast approaching and many of the birds have eggs (Shags already have young). It won’t be long now until the first Guillemot chicks hatch and the cliffs get even louder. Wild flowers are currently in fine bloom with Spring Sandwort, Purple-milk Vetch, Rock-rose, Birds-foot Trefoil, Thrift, Tormentil and Sea Campion all putting on fine displays. Fair I...

Birds and a brew. Bit of this, bit of that, with a brew to top it all off! Tuesday, 29 April 2014. So I’ve finally got a new phone line installed at the cottage. What an ordeal, I’ve had several men up my pole, my router forgot to be sent out and all sorts of other crap. long story short I’m finally back online. After a month of being offline I’ve come to realise just how much I rely on the internet… mainly for bird news. That was until yesterday…. I found the bird in almost the same place I had first se...

Birds and a brew. Bit of this, bit of that, with a brew to top it all off! Wednesday, 28 August 2013. Been away walking the East Highland Way last week. I’m now back in on the action and this is what’s been seen at St Abb's Head over the last few days. East Highland Way Wildcamp. Butterfly numbers are beginning to decrease now with only 4 species recorded on the transect this week. Still good numbers of Small Copper and Wall Brown as well as the White species. The flowering Privet has also been a...A nic...

Birds and a brew. Bit of this, bit of that, with a brew to top it all off! Monday, 23 December 2013. Mental Mega Trip (Part 2) Iguazu. After being overwhelmed by the mass of birdlife at Costanera Sur we flew up to Iguazu (north Argentina near the border with Brazil). This place made Buenos Aires seem cold! With afternoon temp of about 35 degrees c. Our plan was to check out the big waterfall and surrounding rainforest… after all it would be rude not to after travelling halfway across the world. We also v...

Collard Flycatcher, Icterine Warbler, GW Teal, Red-backed Shrike, Bee eater x2, White-Billed Diver and Subalpine Warbler… Just some of what turned up around St Abb’s Head this spring. Below is the speech I would like to give this Yom Kippur, but cannot, at least to my congregation. We end Yom Kippur and for many a highlight of the day, by proclaiming. God – what is it? We all recognize that God is a non-corporal, and therefore an other worldly being(? Or thing. Rambam concedes that we will. Those who don’t place ...
