Mostly Writing about Writing for Writers. Friday, September 23, 2011. New Bunk on Dick. Sometimes I wonder when Melville wrote the first chapter on Moby-Dick. Did he begin with it? Did he revise it many times? There are thirteen short consecutive chapters in which the majority of the text adheres to Ishmael's narrative, then chapter fourteen decides that the narrative has grown stale, and some historical backstory is due. Take out your map and look at it. Consuming animals is the stuff of Moby-Dick. ...

The College Years: Half-Read Books: Whole Lessons

Mostly Writing about Writing for Writers. Tuesday, November 15, 2011. Half-Read Books: Whole Lessons. Freire has a chapter in his book entitled "Don't Let the Fear of What is Difficult Paralyze You." Freire states, simply, and reassuringly, that. The more we accept this discipline, this more we strengthen our ability to overcome threats to it and thus to our ability to study effectively.". Perhaps it's time to get the thirteen year-old dropout alcoholic off my back, and return to the work. My love for yo...

Mostly Writing about Writing for Writers. Tuesday, May 24, 2011. Sandra and Susan: Monster Vaginas and Moby-Dick's Teeth. I took a few personal days in Big Sur last month, taking with me The Madwoman in the Attic: The Woman Writer and the Nineteenth-Century Literary Imagination. The Queen's Looking Glass, pg. 26. Ahhhhh, here I began to see the image of the woman as life/death giver that I have been struck with over and over again in Moby Dick. While women are almost non-existent as characters in the...

The College Years: Hello Again to A Farewell to Arms
http://siameseifyouplease.blogspot.com/2013/01/hello-again-to-farewell-to-arms.html
Mostly Writing about Writing for Writers. Friday, January 18, 2013. Hello Again to A Farewell to Arms. I've read a good deal of Hemingway. I rest on my opinion of him as a genius, and an American dreamboat writer. However, I can tire of him. I tire of his unapologetic chauvinism, the way that he and his characters opine without self-doubt. And yet, I love him. I'm drawn to his characters and their lack of judgement. I'll write more as I finish the novel. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Kitna aanokha ...

Mostly Writing about Writing for Writers. Tuesday, September 23, 2014. A Brief History of Roller Derby in Long Beach. A couple of weeks ago the LB POST published an article about Roller Derby in Long Beach, showcasing Shayna "Pigeon" Mikle, current owner of the roller skate shop on Retro Row, formerly and I think currently known as Moxi. The article attempted to coherently weave together the past and current state of roller derby in Long Beach, but, understandably, it was confusing as hell. Out of the tw...

The College Years: Alley Life
http://siameseifyouplease.blogspot.com/2015/04/alley-life.html
Mostly Writing about Writing for Writers. Monday, April 27, 2015. Four blocks from the beach? This we had to see. Confounding as the inner workings are, it was here, close to the beach, and for let less than a dollar a square foot. Legitimately zoned as live/work space, it provided us with a 60/40 work/live space, with 60% of the rent a business expense. We were intrigued, inspired, and a little nauseous. Living in this pocket of slum apartments and rickety old houses? The day finally came, and the clinc...

Mostly Writing about Writing for Writers. Friday, July 16, 2010. A good friend today asked me, aren't you in school? Aren't you going to USC? My grandmother asked me, aren't you in grad school? Sad face. I held it together, let them know that I had been rejected (following the one time that I sent in a half-witted application, which was probably late), and changed the subject. Oh, I'm still writing, I said. Oh, I'm working, I said. Aw, man, I felt. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). View my complete profile.
