The oven is on. Because I forgot to turn it off. I write because I can. Not because I have anything in particular to say, but because I can say something and people will understand me. I’m not good at talking. My mouth never does me justice. The tube that runs from my brain to my mouth seems blocked, while the one that goes from my head to my hand and the pen it holds, is free and faultless. The oven is on. Because I forgot to turn it off. When I was little, we grew peas on our farm. To save on child care, mum and dad would take me to the pea paddock and leave me. Surely not, I thought. I can’t walk down the deodorant aisle at Coles, let alone cover myself in perfume and wallow in my own flowery odour for hours. Besides, I would remember if I sprayed myself in perfume every day. Then, as if rehearsed beforehand, the four girls sang ‘chlorine! Before I could interrupt.
