The Passionate Hiker: July 2015
http://thepassionatehiker.blogspot.com/2015_07_01_archive.html
A diary of my adventures in the Canadian outdoors. Early days in the outdoors. Thursday, July 23, 2015. Thurs 23 July: Wild Parsnip Hunt. The latest danger to hikers in Eastern Ontario. It’s sort of like a wild turkey hunt but without the gun. Except that wild parsnip is more dangerous than wild turkey. Just today I heard a terrible story of a man who was trimming his fields wearing shorts and no shirt. The burns from the wild parsnip killed him. I checked the price and it starts at $14,000! Immaculately...
The Passionate Hiker: On Patrol
http://thepassionatehiker.blogspot.com/2015/08/new-post.html
A diary of my adventures in the Canadian outdoors. Early days in the outdoors. Wednesday, August 5, 2015. Wed 5 August: Rideau Trail: Ferrier Road Circuit. I was tempted to draw a face on this cloud, but it doesn't need it, does it? You never know what to expect when on patrol. I had travelled south from Ferrier Road a month ago, with weed trimmer in hand, but got only as far as the boardwalk. The trail had been badly overgrown. So now it was time to check the section south from the boardwalk. As for wil...

A diary of my adventures in the Canadian outdoors. Early days in the outdoors. Wednesday, April 29, 2015. Wed 29 April: The Route to the Madawaska. 8220;Doctor Livingstone, I presume? 8221;, I wanted to say, as we unexpectedly met the owner of the land through which we were travelling on our quest to reach the Madawaska River. For in my mind, the search for the Madawaska was reaching Zambesi-like proportions. Enjoy their promotional video: http:/ www.barrettchute.com/. Total Distance: 9.5 km (hike).

A diary of my adventures in the Canadian outdoors. Early days in the outdoors. Saturday, July 26, 2014. The RideauTrail: Port Elmsley (11D) to Smiths Falls Dam (12C). Sat 26 July: The Rideau Trail:. Port Elmsley (11D) to Smiths Falls Dam (12C). Smiths Falls: Rideau Canal Lock Master. According to the map, this section of trail appeared to involve a lot of road walking, including the streets of the largest town between. How could this offer any enjoyment to the hiker? At Port Elmsley, the. Came right up t...

A diary of my adventures in the Canadian outdoors. Early days in the outdoors. Saturday, May 30, 2015. The Cataraqui Trail: (4): Crosby to Indian Lake Road. Sat 30 May: The Cataraqui Trail: Crosby to Indian Lake Road. One of those impossible jigsaw puzzle pictures. It was a hot day for a long walk. The temperature soon rose to 28C (82F). Luckily we had a strong wind in our faces to keep us cool, as our trail finally swung from south to south-west, now heading directly towards distant Strathcona. Having a...

Tuesday, April 20, 2010. Links to this post. Wednesday, October 7, 2009. The Willing Suspension of Disbelief. The discovery of the illusion of implied motion began simply enough with the Zoetrope. When looking at a series of still images, which show the same subject in a slightly different position in time, the rapid succession of those images gets translated in our minds as a moving image. And we do this all of the time! All of the time. We are immersed in the moment and the moment consumes us, carries ...

A diary of my adventures in the Canadian outdoors. Early days in the outdoors. Sunday, August 9, 2015. Sun 9 August: Poonamalie Circuit. Stile at the end of Poonamalie Side Road. It’s an unusual, curious name, and it took me a while to get the pronunciation right. Apparently, it’s Poona-ma-lee, named by one of the canal builders for a place in India. Note: single-click on the first picture above to scroll through the photos separately. Also, see the Map at the end. Height Gain: 55 ft. Emerging into the f...

The Passionate Home
Thursday, January 10, 2013. A FAMILY IN NEED BRINGS A COMMUNITY TOGETHER. Thanks to this lady (my partner in crime from the Million Dollar Neighbourhood) I was honoured to be one of the many volunteers organized by the Abbotsford Police and Fire Departments to rebuild this home. As part of the decor team, I was one of a small group of people who designed, picked colours, shopped, collected donations and did our very best to create a beautiful home for the Connor family. This is the master bedroom. The ho...

The Passionate Home Cook. Bon Appetit and Me. September 30, 2012. 10 years to sort through… I first subscribed to Bon Appetit magazine in January 1999. When I married in 1998 I didn’t cook. Or grocery shop. Or plan a menu. The husband quickly learned if he didn’t cook or shop he would not be eating. Everyone made a big deal about him cooking. He’s a gourmet … Continue reading →.
