The Persepolis Chronicles

Saturday, April 26, 2008. Shirin Ebadi: Dynamite comes in small packages. Where did they come from, and why am I so ignorant about it? I also enjoyed the double-lecture in Farsi and English; where the Farsi-speaking audience would laugh a whole minute before us English-speakers could catch on to what was so funny! So I enjoyed this experience both for its personal and political overtones. Tuesday, April 22, 2008. Embroideries by Marjane Satrapi. If only there were more answers. Tuesday, April 15, 2008.

The Persepolis Chronicles: February 2008

http://www.thepersepolischronicles.blogspot.com/2008_02_01_archive.html

Tuesday, February 26, 2008. Juxtaposing the Good and the Evil (2 reviews in one: please excuse the word count? What's beginning to make more and more sense to me in this class is the fact that things that we've been taught for so long are "different" is completely untrue. In fact, the lesson that I'm learning is that the more different something appears on the surface, the more likely it is to have deep, shared roots with the rest of humanity; the so-called. That also lead me to reflect on the speaker, M...

The Persepolis Chronicles: Rubaiyat Review

http://www.thepersepolischronicles.blogspot.com/2008/03/rubaiyat-review.html

Thursday, March 13, 2008. My not-so-clever attempt at emulating the "rubaiyat" (quattrain format) perhaps falls short of an actual review, so here is the actual review (albeit late) - my apologies! It is in this that the dilemma arises for me: when translating a literature, what kind of credentials and basic understanding is required to truly bring a text alive? Would Karim do a better job simply because he is Persian? Who are we really reading when we read a translation? March 22, 2008 at 4:49 PM.

Honeyrose Reviews: March 2008

http://nimahoney.blogspot.com/2008_03_01_archive.html

Monday, March 10, 2008. All Adam’s race are members of one frame;. Since all, at first, from the same essence came. When by hard fortune one limb is oppressed,. The other members lose their wonted rest,. If thou feel’st not for others’ misery,. A son of Adam is no name for thee. Another translation of this same poem goes:. All human beings are in truth akin,. All in creation share one origin;. When fate allots a member pangs and pain,. No ease for other members then remains;. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).

My lids so smooth and my nails so pale. Did you know then that we would come this far. Wander these many years and more. That we would rehearse this long day's journey. Picture Persia: Iranian Democracy Today, As The Media Reports It

http://picturepersia.blogspot.com/2008/03/iranian-democracy.html

An enlightening voyage through studies of "Iranian Culture in Translation.". Tuesday, March 11, 2008. Iranian Democracy Today, As The Media Reports It. While I understand an election of some sort is better than none at all, and I applaud the efforts and passion of those who clearly want a fair ballot, articles streaming in from the media have me easily skeptical of Iran’s democratic (or lack thereof) procedures. Why do only approximately 50% of U.S. voters going to the polls? Do they feel disenfranchised?

Head's blog | Ed Elliott's thought for the week

Ed Elliott's thought for the week. Farewell to the Upper Sixth. May 22, 2015. Ed Elliott, Head. My advice to the Class of 2015 – with thanks to Baz Luhrmann:. Enjoy the power and beauty of your youth. Do one thing every day that challenges you. Don’t be reckless with other people’s hearts. Don’t put up with people who are reckless with yours. Don’t waste time on jealousy. The race of life is long and in the end it’s only with yourself. Some days are good and some days are bad. Be kind to your knees.
